gutenprint - wrong owner of rastertogutenprint.5.2
« on: October 09, 2011, 05:22:45 AM »
in the forum several problems with cups occurred caused by the errors of rastentogutenprint.
the error calls that the owner should be root of the file /usr/local/lib/cups/filter/rastertogutenprint.5.2.
would you please change this ownership.
with this change the cups configuration based on gutenprint works fine.

this is one more (like cups1311 and the original foomatic-rip) where file permissions have been changed from the original "make install"

..the problem is to know what has been changed now that the maintainer is no longer around.

file permissions adjusted and modified version uploaded.

I see the config file is in /etc/cups rather than /usr/local/etc/cups

sorry to ask again on this subject.
I have TCL 3.8, the new cups and gutenprint and ghostscript plus ghostscript_common installed.
I am able to install the HP LJ 3 but I am still getting this permission error.
I installed the latest gutenprint today
Do I need to install the cups again?
Do I have to modify a config file for that? If yes . - which one?
Would upgrading to 3.8.4 help?

If you're using the latest version of cups, I don't believe you have to install it again - you might want to check that you're not using the cups.conf from cups1311 though..

thank you for this:
You might be right because all my config and pdd are in /usr/local/etc/cups/......
Is this proof that I am using the cups1311 stuff?

if yes should I delete this folders and files and restart the new cups and check whether the
config files are now in
I see the config file is in /etc/cups ?

The config files are placed as follows:

cups1311: /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
cups: /usr/local/etc/cups/cupsd.conf

It's probably easiest to check for /tmp/tcloop/cups1311 or /tmp/tcloop/cups to see which extension you're using

Hi beerstein,

several weeks ago I also set up cups for a HP printer (LJ5L) using TCL 3.8.4.  I tried
many different configurations using gutenprint, foomatic-rip and HPLIP. I can confirm,
that cups and access right are a theme.

I ended up in a very simple configuration with cups (not cups1311), ghostscript and
ghostscript-commons.
Maybe you can take a look at my thread
http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12403.0.html

As stated there the only thing I had to find was the correct ppd-File for may LJ5L.
So I took a huge HP-related archive from http://www.openprinting.org and extracted
the appropriate one for the LJ5L .
For configuration files placed in /etc/cups or similar I added them to .filetool.lst and it worked for me.
Obviously although cups1311 does not need root rights for administration via browser it needs root
rights for its supporting modules of the form <x>to<y>.

best regards xyz-worx

thank you for your help: I remember the problems with parport_pc and lp. I found that out after a while. But the permission stuff is haunting me while I am trying to install a Samsung MF under 3.8.4

Today I also compared a system where a HPJL5P works fine with cups1.311 with the system which gives me the headaches. I discovered that the config files are:
cups1311: /etc/cups/cupsd.conf in one system and
cups: /usr/local/etc/cups/cupsd.conf in the other system

From xyz-worxs post I see that he is not using gutenprint. I will try this out and remove gutenprint and go just with ghostscript stuff. I have the ppd file for the HPLJ3 from the previous install with gutenprint and can put this one manually into /usr/local/etc/cups/ppd
I also will leave out the foomatic filter thing because it gave me just trouble when I tried to hook up my Samsung MF.
thank you so much

Hi beerstein,

I assume the reason why my LJ5L can work is, that the combination cups/ghostscript
supports HP printers (with PCL language) directly. What you need additionally is
the appropriate PPD-file for the printer model being used.

I guess the Samsung printers have their own printer language, so maybe you can find some info here
http://www.openprinting.org/driver/splix/

Hope it worx!

..and I'd say it's perhaps better to follow this:
Quote
If you are packaging the driver for a Linux distribution, it is highly recommended to use a Subversion snapshot and not the 2.0.0 release.

..rather then try to use one of the deb/rpm listed

svn co https://splix.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/splix splix

I could compile splix for you to test if that would help - send me a pm if so
