emelfm2 minor bug in changing ownership
« on: December 23, 2011, 04:45:34 PM »
I've run into an apparent bug in emelfm2 where it let me change the owner but not the group of a directory:

Code: [Select]
tc@leepc:~$ ls -l /mnt/sdb1/boot
total 16
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root          4096 Dec 23 00:33 grub/
drwxr-xr-x    5 root     root          4096 Sep 11 21:16 tc3.8.4/
drwxr-xr-x    4 root     root          4096 Sep 25 12:56 tc4.0/
drwxr-xr-x    5 tc       staff         4096 Dec 22 13:03 tc4.2rc3/

#use sudo emelfm2 to create /mnt/sdb1/boot/tc4.2rc4 (tool button on center bar)

tc@leepc:~$ ls -l /mnt/sdb1/boot
total 20
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root          4096 Dec 23 00:33 grub/
drwxr-xr-x    5 root     root          4096 Sep 11 21:16 tc3.8.4/
drwxr-xr-x    4 root     root          4096 Sep 25 12:56 tc4.0/
drwxr-xr-x    5 tc       staff         4096 Dec 22 13:03 tc4.2rc3/
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root          4096 Dec 23 16:31 tc4.2rc4/

#use emelfm to change owner of new dir to tc:staff (highlight file, then
# right-click - actions - change owners - set user to tc and group to staff

tc@leepc:~$ ls -l /mnt/sdb1/boot
total 20
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root          4096 Dec 23 00:33 grub/
drwxr-xr-x    5 root     root          4096 Sep 11 21:16 tc3.8.4/
drwxr-xr-x    4 root     root          4096 Sep 25 12:56 tc4.0/
drwxr-xr-x    5 tc       staff         4096 Dec 22 13:03 tc4.2rc3/
drwxr-xr-x    2 tc       root          4096 Dec 23 16:31 tc4.2rc4/

#owner changed but group did not

Is this a bug in the app or am I doing something dumb?

I have noticed quite a bit of similar quirks with emelfm2, it often won't let me change perms or owner even in root mode.  It is the file manager I always use as I like the look and feel though.

There is a newer version released, and I have been playing with it some and it seems less quirky.  I will aim to package and upload it soon.

emelfm2 is my favorite so far on tc - though I'l admit its the first one I tried and I haven't exhaustively gone down the list and tried them all.  I haven't revisited fluff or mfm for a while, but when one of them was in base I would have used it in preference to loading an additional .tcz (with deps) unless I needed to "bring out the big guns" for whatever reason.  (not complaining about not having one in base, mind you - as a personal choice (with widely varying public opinion), whatever choice was included would likely be "wrong" for so many users.)

I've tried emelfm a few times but I've always gone back to emelfm2 - because I have most of its deps loaded anyhow so I'm not saving that much by sticking with the old one.  It never occurred to me that it might be actually working better.

There's enough room for improvement in the emelfm2 "usr experience" that I actually fired up mc just the other day.

New version of emelfm2?  Do tell... new features?  Less quirky? - not sure I could use non-quirky software.  :)

One thing emelfm2 0.8.0 offers is a custom date format for the file lists.  That by itself would make it a worthwhile upgrade.  "ISO8601" format is great, except that stupid "T" between the date and time completely ruins it.  :)

It's a bug in 0.7.3, fixed in 0.7.4

If you are requesting an update to 0.8.0, I join with you.
