Can somebody help make mobile broadband easy to use?

hi guy,

i guess that your device is changing from a modem to mass-storage device.
that means at first the modem-device starts connecting, but afterwards,
after switch to the usb-stick-function the network-conncection is interrupted.
to prevent this unwanted behavior, you probably need the usb-modeswitch.tcz!
did you install it yet?

I suppose this is where you need the carrier-specific magic commands, wvdialconf doesn't know how to do those. Also, please post the permissions of /dev/ttyUSB0, perhaps we need an adjustment for user tc to be able to use the modems.

@netnomad: If ttyUSB0 still exists, usb_modeswitch is not needed. Some of the devices can appear in both modes at once.

I have actually tried many different things. None of them have worked.

Yes, I am running usb-modeswitch.

ttyUSB0, ttyUSB1, ttyUSB2 and ttyUSB3, are owned by root, staff, with permissions crw-rw----.


I do know that I must use PAP authentication, and I don't know how to specify that with wvdial.


Getting any method to work would be useful.

However, I believe getting network-manager to work is also important. This will make it easy for everyone. It is very simple when it works. There is probably a dependency or dependencies missing.

In Tinycore 4.1, the graphical interface works, but something else doesn't. It needs a lot of things in OnBoot, to get that far.

In Tinycore 3.8.4 with 4x apps, it does not work at all. There is probably no point in downloading 3x apps again.

It supposedly works in 3.8.4 with 3x apps. What has been removed from 4.1 that was in 3.8.4. What extension would fix this?

Probably something simple needs to be added to make it work.

I have also run Puppy Linux, and it has wvdial. It is easier to set up. But I can't get it to work. I have tried all combinations of selections.

Is there someone who can sort out the correct dependencies for network manager gnome, or at least network manager?

This would make it easy for everyone.

Did you try starting the various network manager components from a terminal window to check for error messages about missing deps?

I have started network manager in a terminal window, but not all of the components. From that and other information, I finished up with a lot of things in OnBoot, with more things working, but still not able to connect to the internet.

I figured, after it was working, I could see what I could remove from OnBoot and still have it working. But I have not had it working to do that.

See Onyarian's post earlier on, for a good starting point.

I added libxcb.tcz to OnBoot to get the graphical interface, but that may be a dependency of something I did not have in OnBoot at the time.

If it were me, I'd start with nothing "onboot", load network manager from a terminal window once booted and take it from there using Onyarian's guidelines..
