Watcher - an Idea
« on: November 27, 2011, 08:35:58 AM »
Sometimes an indication of current system load is useful information to have.  It is also a good fit with the information currently provided by Watcher.

Load average reporting is often taken at 1, 5 and 15 minute periods to indicate trends.  How about watcher reporting only the load now (or nearly now).  This would take up very little screen space and lend itself to being expressed in percentage form in a similar manner to current Watcher indicators.  Perhaps even the CPU and RAM elements might become switchable to save screen space.

The percentage figure expressed might also take into account the number of CPUs/cores.  For example 100% on a single CPU/core might be expressed as 50% on a dual CPU/core machine and 25% on a quad machine.

I think the usefulness of the load averages is quite small for most folk. Watcher shouldn't really try to compete with conky and the rest.

For these reasons I'm not going to add that support to watcher. We'd accept an extension of a watcher fork of course.
