On dial up...
« on: October 13, 2011, 11:01:54 AM »
I have searched, but the answer is elusive so far.  Does TCL come with a provision for dial up users "out of the box"?  Been running PCLos2007 for a long time, but it is showing its age.  Tried Vector Linux, but the dialer is screwed up from the get go, and the "cures" for it do not work.
TCL seems to be what I am looking for, but just trying to find out about dial up before I order a disc.  Thank you for any information.

Hi independent
Someone more informed will have to help you with dialup, but why do you want to order a disc?
You can download and burn Tinycore to a disc yourself for free.

TC has no dial-up support "out of the box", you'll need at least the 'pppd.tcz' extension.

To create the 'PPP' configuration you could use the 'pppsetup.tcz', or the 'wvdial.tcz' extension. Depending on what kind of modem you've got there might be other extensions required, but that depends on your circumstances.

What would help IMHO a lot is to take a very close look into your currently working Linux system (e.g. the 'dmesg' output and the critical configuration files that I'd expect to be in '/etc/ppp'). It might be possible to "merge" the important parts of the existing configuration into a TC set-up. This could end up being easier than trying to build a configuration from scratch.

IIRC there have been threads here that discussed something along those lines when migrating from Puppy Linux. Please make good use of this forum's search function, to see what others have done.

Thanks for the replies.  True, the distro is small enough to down load, even on dial up.  However, it then becomes the proverbial Catch 22 as far as being able to use it online.  Only option is to trundle 20+ miles to hook up to a DSL line, which is silly overall, and hope I can figure out the dialer install.   Again, thank you.

All right that is a bit tricky, but before you needlessly waste petrol to drive around, please take a look at this (pretty current) post, where another user claims to have amended a script from Jason to make it compliant with TC 4.x to download extensions using another Linux system (for the TC 3.x version just go to the original thread).
