Streaming Audio to Internet via Line-In

Hello. . .

I'm looking for a good step-by-step tutorial that will help me set up a computer to take audio fed to the computer via Line In, and stream it to the Internet.  Don't be afraid to insult my intelligence, because I know NOTHING!  I'm new to TinyCore, and am trying to use an old computer for the sole purpose of a simple, low-quality audio stream.

I've used VLC in the past to stream audio from the microphone and create an "intercom" of sorts. I don't have the time to help much with the setup, but you may be able to figure it out on your own or google some tutorials.

I tried VLC. . .  but, I can't seem to find what to select for VLC to capture the "line-in" from my audio card.  The options it gives do not seem to relate to a generic audio card.

And, believe me. . .  I've searched the boards.  Most refer to streaming from audio/video files, and the ones that do offer insight aren't complete how-tos. 

I hope I can figure this out. . .  an computer that solely streams out audio seems like it would be the perfect use for an old PC.

You could try if Audacity lets you record. Once you have that going, looks like Icecast etc would be needed; there doesn't seem to be an icecast extension yet.

That is configured in ALSA or OSS, whichever you are using. VLC simply records from the currently selected input device.

so you mean you will have a web page that visits arrive at and click
"listen now" to hear your streaming audio coming from your home web
server.

i know most people just embed a player inside the web page and then
i don't know much else.

My friend made a web page with audio streaming offered...and i think the widget that he used while designing the web page was just a player like winamp styled and
as he designed it asked him for a stream feed location as the players source.

it was very simple to do at the time

i never really thought about it....how you stream stuff from your own
PC so that  multiple internet visitors can simultaneously listen to the
same stream via a link on your web page.
