Help installing Epson Workforce 635 printer
« on: September 09, 2011, 10:16:00 PM »
Can anyone help me get my Epson WorkForce 635 printer up and running? I tried the instructions on the wiki at http://wiki.tinycorelinux.net/wiki:printer_setup_using_cups to no avail. I downloaded the source for the driver from http://avasys.jp/ and compiled successfully. I added the following lines to cupsd.conf:
Code: [Select]
Listen *:631
ServerAlias *
Port 631
When I try to print a test page, everything appears to complete successfully, and there are no errors or warnings, but nothing happens. I am completely stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi:
to set up a printer, which is not shown during the setup procedure in:

http://localhost:631

is not easy. Please see my recent post (Samsung SCX-4521F)

First: Which cups are you using? (cups.tcz or cups1311.tcz) see ownership problems in my posts!

Second: Do you see your printer model during the add printer procedure? If not - did you find a PPD file for your model?

Third: Epson printers are well supported in Linux - did you "on boot": gutenprint.tcz, ghostscript.tcz and ghostscript_common.tcz ?

Fourth: Check wherther your PPD file needs foomatic-rip or not

t(w)o be(ers) or not t(w)o be(ers) that is the question

I set up a fresh install of Tiny Core 3.8.4 and installed the following extensions: cups1311, gutenprint, ghostscript, ghostscript_common, and foomatic-rip. Then I used The standard "add printer" procedure at http://localhost:631. It worked.

Before I was using the vendor-supplied PPD and cups.tcz. I may experiment further to see what went wrong before, but for now, it works.

Thank you for the help. I also found the Samsung SCX-4521F post to be quite informative.

Hi: Good to hear that your printer prints!
I still have problems and I also might go back to the older version of cups. Does your PPD file needs foomatic-rip?
You can check for it while opening the PPD with leafpad or so, Did you encounter any ownership problems
related to foomatic-rip?

Be aware that the maintainer of cups1311 is no longer active, so it effectively isn't supported..
