Browser Woes [mostly solved, read on]
« on: July 09, 2011, 04:38:57 PM »
Hi all.

I'm having some problems with the newest version of TC.
I'm NEW to all this, though have fiddled with TC before, with mixed success.
VERY impressed by the work that you guys have done with this small-size distro!

First issue:
I don't seem to be able to control the screen brightness.  XVESA gives only small resolution options, so I let Xorg do it's automagic and up it comes in 1024x768, but rather dim.  And the hotkey for adjusting brightness doesn't work.  Need a driver for some old laptop screens?  Or the keybd?

Second issue:
Maybe related, or a result of my inexperience.
Have tried all the browsers available in the repository.  None have download or install errors.  So far so good.
Mozilla stuff seems like it will work, but the colors are all inverted.  The whole screen, only while the program is running.  Weeeiird.  Thats with and without branding, several different ones.  I tried Iron, and it just stares at me.  Chromium seems to want to work if I hold my mouth right - 95% reliably.   Dillo - like Iron.
Midori - in use now, but man is it simple.  I am such a fan of Firefox and similar, wish I could figure out how to make this old laptop behave.

All help appreciated.

A little more info:
I have an Intel 815M graphic thingamabob, called chipset ID 11308086.

Another poster asked about a similar issue a while back . . .
There were suggestions regarding Xorg.
I realized I don't have that, so installed Xorg, the whole thing including 3D.
Don't know if that was necessary, but it looks really nice, though not right yet. :P
The screen area is now much smaller.  It looks quite sharp and bright.
Also, the cursor and where it clicks are offset.  Makes it very hard to navigate.

Xorg.conf seems to be the answer, but I need some assistance with this.
I will continue ot search around and find out more.

Is it possible that a copy of Xorg.conf from my Puppy partition on the same computer
(who knows what version) might be  a useful thing here?
Again, thanks in advance for any help. :-\

The xorg.conf from your puppy installation would most probably work fine.

You could also give Xvesa + 915resolution a try.

Thx juanito

I did try, but mangled it due to my inexperience.  Will retry.

Found a thorough post by danielbarnes about xorg.conf  (et al).
It goes over the cli method how-to make vesa auto-configure  -  I think.

Maybe I should trust the cli more.  I could not find .filetool.list, but if it is hidden . ..
In Linux Mint ctrl+H toggles hidden.
How about in TC?  Fluff?   I'll search.

If things work better, I'll post a synopsis - could be useful to whomever.

Edit:  tomorrow.

Wow, you are pretty now, TC   :D
Screen is now fully utilized, and bright as can be.
Unfortunately not adjustable, as yet, but much better than before.

Turns out 915resolution dows not go back quite far enough - 815 chip is too old  :-\
Excellent for those for whom it works, I'm sure. :)
OK, I tried the newest Xorg.  Nothing but a blank screen, or ignoring me and using same old blah.
Starte over, and used Xorg 7.4, and tried a few things.

What worked for me on old Sony Vaio with Intel 815M chipset (chipset ID 11308086)
using the CD and USB for /tce :
*From fresh, installed Graphics support extension ON BOOT because Xorg needs it.
*Instaled iptables ONBOOT and activated
*installed Xorg 7.4 ONBOOT
*Followed instructions from DanielBarnes, search topic "open-vm-tools for VMware"
sounds off-topic, but he responds to multiple issues, including clear instructions how to bump
Xorg into action in a persistent way!  Way to go!
*Had to alter newly created xorg.conf.  Already saved and referred to for boot.
Opened in editor with sudo.  Compared to a saved xorg.conf from Puppy install
on the same machine.    Mostly substituted lines or sections from the Pup version.
Vesa never seems to see a bigger screen than 800x600 on ancient hardware.
*Installed Synaptics package, called for by the Puppy mouse section.

Et voila, BEAUTIFUL screen, slightly less touchy touchpad, and unfortunately lost USB mouse.
BUT, the objective - FIREFOX now looks FANTASTIC.
Will fiddle with mouse bits to try to find my bug - what I changed to kill poor USB mousy.

Thank you for your assistance, and if anybody requests the xorg.conf file, I'm all about sharing.
peace
