Wow, you are pretty now, TC
Screen is now fully utilized, and bright as can be.
Unfortunately not adjustable, as yet, but much better than before.
Turns out 915resolution dows not go back quite far enough - 815 chip is too old
Excellent for those for whom it works, I'm sure.
OK, I tried the newest Xorg. Nothing but a blank screen, or ignoring me and using same old blah.
Starte over, and used Xorg 7.4, and tried a few things.
What worked for me on old Sony Vaio with Intel 815M chipset (chipset ID 11308086)
using the CD and USB for /tce :
*From fresh, installed Graphics support extension ON BOOT because Xorg needs it.
*Instaled iptables ONBOOT and activated
*installed Xorg 7.4 ONBOOT
*Followed instructions from DanielBarnes, search topic "open-vm-tools for VMware"
sounds off-topic, but he responds to multiple issues, including clear instructions how to bump
Xorg into action in a persistent way! Way to go!
*Had to alter newly created xorg.conf. Already saved and referred to for boot.
Opened in editor with sudo. Compared to a saved xorg.conf from Puppy install
on the same machine. Mostly substituted lines or sections from the Pup version.
Vesa never seems to see a bigger screen than 800x600 on ancient hardware.
*Installed Synaptics package, called for by the Puppy mouse section.
Et voila, BEAUTIFUL screen, slightly less touchy touchpad, and unfortunately lost USB mouse.
BUT, the objective - FIREFOX now looks FANTASTIC.
Will fiddle with mouse bits to try to find my bug - what I changed to kill poor USB mousy.
Thank you for your assistance, and if anybody requests the xorg.conf file, I'm all about sharing.
peace
