[SOLVED] Tiny Core fails to start X on Dell Latitude 300XT
« on: October 27, 2011, 03:43:46 PM »
Since the desktop boots to a green and yellow screen after Tiny Core installation, I used the "How to use framebuffer X server?" article in the Tiny Core FAQ http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html.   The screen looks normal after enacting the startx command.  Upon rebooting to the laptop after framebuffer X server was installed, my laptop stops with a "failed for waitforX" message.

I can repeatedly boot the laptop using the text boot code command [explained in framebuffer article] via LiveCD command prompt, but never can boot normally via grub.

How do I troubleshoot and resolve this X starting problem?

Since you're using a dell laptop, I guess it has intel graphics - you could try using 915resolution?

Google says Neomagic/2mb. To see any errors from Xfbdev, run the first line of .xsession without the error redirection.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

After removing the error redirection, I get the following message in /tmp/wm_errors:
     Can't open display:  :0.0

What does this mean?

Using the "How to use framebuffer X server" article with a vga=791 and installing Xorgs-7.6.tcz extension before starting X (startx), Tiny Core 4.1 looks good and the installation works very well after rebooting.  Thus, the Xorgs-7.6 video driver for this difficult Neomagic video display works much better than the Xvesa extension.  In the future, I will upgrade to the current version of Tiny Core Linux.
