Suggestion for improved Menu arrangement
« on: December 08, 2009, 08:12:04 PM »
I think it would be a good idea to change the menu arrangement.

1. Have an item on the menu called Administration, and have all administrative tools under Administration.

2. Have the applications/programs on the main menu, instead of under Applications.

3. Have some consistency with capital letters in application names. Some start with capitals, some start with small letters, some use all capitals. This would be up to those making extensions.

Like this:

Desktop 1
Desktop 2
New Desktop
Firefox
leafpad
oo2
XFE
Xfi
Administration
Logout

Under Administration have

Appbrowser
Control Panel
Refresh Menu
Shells
Tools

What are the thoughts of others, particularly those developing Tiny Core and extensions?

That puts often used programs too many levels down. I like it just the way it is.

I use administrative programs to set things up after installation, and occasionally change something.

I use regular applications much more.

What are "often used programs" for you?

I am also thinking, at this stage there are a significant number of people involved in developing Tiny Core, making extensions, or modifying their setup.

I think in the future, there will be many more people who just use Tiny Core as a regular operating system.

I think this would be better for them.

I am just making a suggestion, to start a discussion. The views of more other people would be appreciated.

The default window manager does not use a file for its menu.
The menu is dynamically displayed based on the contents and sort order of directories under .wmx with a few hard coded exceptions, like "New desktop" and "Logout" which always are at the bottom. Furthermore, TC's dynamic application extensions by design are in a separate directory, as even before with jwm.

I normally have anywhere between 10 and 20 extension menu items, and if they were in the main part of the menu instead of the extension submenu it would make for too long a main menu.  With only a few apps loaded, having extension entries in the main menu may be feasible, but not after the app list grows.

I think what Guy has suggested is OK - plus there should be some arrangement of adding oftenly used applications at the top of the Menu after the next boot under the title - Favorites Apps- or something like that.

Like this:
------------
Favorite Apps:
App1
App2
.......
-----------
Desktop 1
Desktop 2
New Desktop
Firefox
leafpad
oo2
XFE
Xfi
Administration
Logout
--------

It means some trcking & saving of oftnely used apps in the default TCE directory itself like - defaultApps.conf - . :)
