The issue (last time I checked) is that there was a bug with 2.8.x that prevented gimp from working with wacom tablets, which is probably the one most commonly used by digital graphics artists.

I was waiting for this bug to be addressed and/or gtk3 to work with tc

It has a hidden dep on xcb IIRC, while our current X stack is xcb-less.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.
