remaster tcl
« on: October 18, 2011, 02:03:32 PM »
Hello

can you please tell me how to use the "ezremaster icon" in the new version of tcl  4.0.

1) i have a laptop with a CD rewriter drive. The drive contains a rewritbale CD with tcl 4.0.1 on it.

2) The laptop is booted into tcl from the CD disc in (1) above.  The laptop does not contain a hard drive

3) i select the "ez-remaster" icon and follow all instructions. I add a single tool called "reminna.tcz" and "remmina-plugins.tcz" to the remaster "on boot"

4) The whole proces goes well until i click "create iso" and this procedure appears to do something but reports and
error at the end of itself.

5) I check the folder tmp/ezremaster and look in the "image" directory but it doeas not contain a single .iso file.

6) Presumably, if the .iso file was there you would then need to burn it  "using which tcl tool from the app store for burning?...and what is the command to burn an .iso file?

thanks

V.

Hi cast-fish
In regards to item 6, check this thread, I think you are familiar with it:
http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,9743.msg59625.html#msg59625

As to why it did not work, my guess (since you chose not to share the error) is maybe you don't
have enough RAM to build the ISO image.

What error are you getting?   Can you post your /tmp/ezremaster/ezremaster.log file?   How much memory does your computer have?

uh the conmputer is a compaq laptop with athlon 1.2ghz mobile cpu by AMD.....and 256 megabyte sd ram.

There isn't any hard drive in the laptop so there is 550 megabyte of swap space on a pen drive over usb 1.1

The tcl version is 4.0.1 on rewritable CD disc.

i simply boot the laptop from CD and follow the instructions.

i don't have the error log to hand....

is it possible RAM is a little low?...say 16 megabyte of ram is used for video....TCL uses another 12....then the ezremaster tool needs what?

bieng as i only added a tiny extension to the remaster....why would 256 ram not be enough?   ....(remmina.tcz and reminapluggins.tcz)

oh wait a moment

does multicore  (TCL plus) use 40 megs of ram?....then 16 for video maybe this would take me below say 180 meg of spare ram  (tcl 4.0.1......)

the TCL was not installed....just booted off CD

Hi cast-fish
Well, you need whatever the operating system requires plus enough space to unpack the ISO
plus the size of the new ISO plus whatever I missed. Two things to keep in mind:
1. When the ISO is unpacked, the tinycore.gz file needs to be uncompressed.
2. The swap does not count as usable RAM for unpacking and building the ISO files.

Swapping over USB 1.1 will be like being skinned slowly.

It is likely running out of memory.   I would recommend you try it on a computer with more memory, or in ezremaster on the first screen change the "path to temporary work directory.." to something like a mounted hard drive or USB memory card.   By default ezremaster uses /tmp/ezremaster which is in RAM, so if you don't have enough memory you can change this to a real drive to reduce memory requirements.

ah brian...that sounds like a good idea

Uh......... i find that swapping at usb 1.1 can turn an ineffective tcl laptop
into an effective tcl machine. So, it's just about getting what one can
out of all available resources isn't it.

if ram is 256
minus 40 taken by TCL multicore.
minus 16 or 32 allocated to video.....from bios setting
minus whatever else
then minus what "ezremaster" needs for it's correct operation...

perhaps it is exactly that...the machine is running out of ram
