Hello,
got a problem with running TC on IBM Thinkpad 390X (400M,128MRam, 40Ghd, video card NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV 2,5MRam)
works OK in txt mode :)
When I run X : tinycore vga=7xx...( I tried all relvant opions eg 790,791 etc) laptop freeze. I can't do ctrl-alt-del; if I press caps lock LED doesn't work. I can only do hard power off.
I tried puppy linux and gui works OK, win 98 also works OK.
I read many treads regarding installation and settings but it seems that there is not case like that.

Hi sigusmund
Type dmesg > dmesg.txt
Take the file dmesg.txt and attach it to your next post where it says Addiitional Options.
-
Since it looks like Xvesa doesn't work for you, you could try Xorg-7.5.
You might need to google on the name of your graphics hardware AND xorg.conf to get a config that works

Hi,
I did dmesg dump. What do we looking for?
I have problem with copy /paste operation since 390X doesn't have LAN interface - LAN is possible with PCMCIA card.
As I can see fom dump it is stated console vga+ 80x25?

Update:
Laptop doesn't have LAN interface and uses PCMCIA for internet connection. For installing files CDROM could be used .

Video card is supported on Xorg, but I have problems to get it work on 390. Since lack of internet connection I burn CD with Xorg-7.4-dev.tcz. I tried to install it with tcp-load but failed.
I have problem to locate apropriate files for configure xsession -> due to howtos and faq and google it should be on /home/tc/ but there is empy directory.
I tried something with Xfbdev - load it and change Xserver file to fom Xvesa to Xfbdev and then do setup and startx but result was the same- black screen with cursor and laptop freeze.
-
Did you try to run xsetup.sh from the prompt with Xvesa?
To use Xorg-7.5, you will need to download, save and then load the following files:
pixman.tcz
fontconfig.tcz
openssl-0.9.8.tcz
Xorg-7.5-bin.tcz
Xorg-7.5-lib.tcz
Xorg-fonts.tcz
expat2.tcz
Xorg-7.5.tcz
-
Hi,
xsetup.sh - of course I did with some frezze results. When I change resolution I get different sizes of cursor, so I thing that configuration is properly read.
By the way - can you explain me why I don't see .xsession in /home/tc directory -> I guess there are setting sfor Xvesa? Could that be a reason?
And since I am new here could you explain howto download tcz files? If I go to TC download extension page I can see just description of files. However it is advised that application browser should be used - but I have first to bring TS's GUI up and running. ?
I downloaded Xorg-7.4.tczl from http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/ -> 7.4 is the latest release there.
They don't have other files (pixman etc) in repository.

I'm attaching dmesg.txt file

If you have an Internet connection, you can do it with "tce-load -iw Xorg-7.5"
If you do not have an Internet connection, you need to use a url as follows from elsewhere:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/3.x/tcz/extension_name.tcz

Hmph, neotragic ::)
Use forum search, "neomagic" ;)

Hi Juanito,
This is exactly my problem. I could DL those files from another PC, but there is no link for it.
If I follow your link I get http 404 message "page is not found"
I can see just name of file; however I am able to select to DL md5 and info part? I tried this with IE and Firefox

Hi Tinypoodle,
tnx for joining The party :)
As I can see there are two kind of people on forum - those who tried TC out of a box and win and those who are despertly try to overcome problems and quit :)
I checked again for solution in old posts but failed, I guess I don't have knowledge deep enough, yet.
So I must relay on your advises and uncle google.
Do you have any idea how to solve my problem?

Now it is OK, I will DL, try to installl and report progress. Tnx again!

Hi sigusmund
Could the boot code "text" you are using have anything to do with it?
-
When I run X : tinycore vga=7xx...( I tried all relvant opions eg 790,791 etc) laptop freeze.
Better to start with
vga=ask
I tried puppy linux and gui works OK, win 98 also works OK.
With which X server exactly?
-
hi everyone,
rich: I use "tinycore textˇ" because video mode doesn't work...
tinypoodle:
puppy linux X server - Xorg;
vga=ask I get video modes similar like in original boot menu. I select 1024x768x16, when boot proceed I even get tiny core picture in upper left corner; but when x server starts I get blank screen with cusor in right resolution and that's it.
Juanito: I DL all files, load Xorg, finnaly got config files :), check if resolution and video mode is OK, check in Xserver if there is Xorg. Than I startx and get just black screen even without cursor.
Now I'm searching for Xorg info to get it work. To short learning curve do you guys have any suggestion?
-
@sigusmund: Looks like you've managed to get the 'Xorg' X server and all it's dependencies installed, but are still not getting it to work. Are you aware that 'Xorg' produces a log file (i.e. '/var/log/Xorg.0.log') that should contain very useful information? I guess it would help to attach it here.
Please note:
(1) Be aware that running 'Xorg' multiple times leads to a renaming of the previous log file version (to 'Xorg.0.log.old').
(2) The 'vga=...' boot code has only an impact on the console (hence the "tiny core picture in upper left corner" and possibly a different than the typical 80x25 layout) plus is required if you want to use the frame buffer X server (i.e. the 'Xfbdev.tcz' extension). If you want to use the 'Xorg' server you won't need it (unless you like the slower console with the option to see more than 25 lines).
(3) Furthermore there is the option to run sudo Xorg -configure and share the resulting 'xorg.conf.new' and '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' here with us.

In that case one approach is to load Xfbdev.tcz after booting with boot code 'text'.
And if my memory serves me right, for many cases with neomagic cards Xfbdev has been the working solution in the past (also on other systems).
EDIT: A quick forum search would bring up several successful usage cases...

Hi,
I'm attaching Xorg log and config file. I can see that neotragic card is properly recognized and selected in config file, but startx brings me again black screen and freezed Lap. Therefore I can't check log and findout what went wrong. >:(
Searching old topics: I' not to lazy for do that but... my problem is unique ;D
I found this topics: Problems does not work on Acer313T - Stefanogreg solved similar problem with TC ver 2.11.6 and Xfbde.tcz from 3.x... If Xorg will not start to work I 'll try with Xfbde
Tnx for all help!

I'm not an expert of interpreting the 'Xorg.0.log' I just thought it might help to give someone else an idea. Mind you this log is for the 'sudo Xorg -configure' run (as suggested), which does not seem to crash. I wonder what log you'd get if you let 'Xorg' run for a few seconds and then have it killed again, e.g. via
Xorg & PID=$! ; sleep 10 ; kill $PID
This should work without you being stuck with a non-responsive X server (at least it does it for me).
BTW, have you tried (as suggested in the 'Xorg-7.5.tcz.info') to use the 'xorg.conf.vesa' (e.g. via sudo cp -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf.vesa /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then start 'Xorg')?
Do I get this right, the Puppy X server works on the same hardware? I believe they use an older version of Xorg, but it would not harm to take a look at their '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' to compare and maybe (if used) their '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'. You might as well attach those files here.
I also had a quick look at this ThinkWiki page (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Neomagic_MagicMedia256AV) and our kernel is not build with all the reported settings. So this might be another area to consider, but I'm not in a position to judge whether it is worth the effort to build a new kernel.

Hey,
IT IS WORKING juhej !!!! ;D
Problem was in .xsession. For all (re)searchers:
- burn CD (mine ver is 3.7rc2)
- at boot write down tinycore text
- you sholud get something like tc@box:~$
- cd /home/tc/
- ls -a (.xsession is "hidden")
- vi .xsession
- delete second row "waitforX"
- exit from vi with :wq!
- startx
Tnx all for support !
