just load Xorg to make sure X starts properly (without compiz) and make sure you have glx support (run glxinfo in a terminal) because compiz needs it, also read compiz-base.tcz.info

I might also help to tell what version of vmware you are running, and what the host is.

tried to install compiz-base in virtualbox, same problem
so i far i detected only the cause of the problem : software rendering (mesa glx) (even if 3d acceleration is enabled)
a similar bug opened for ubuntu natty here

and falling back to software rendering
