Title: Micro Core Linux as web server

Hi there,

I'm considering the Micro Core Linux 64 bit distro as a basis for a web server that will be run with either GWan or Lighttpd. Generally speaking, would you say that this is this a good idea or rather a bad move as compared to Ubuntu Server for example?

I was kind of amazed to see the minimal resources the system needs. It had around 15MB, whereas Ubuntu Server has a minimum 100MB. Would security be an issue if I use Micro Core Linux? What do I need to consider?

Will it actually be faster than an Ubuntu Server or does the MB Ubuntu use serve a purpose?

Also, what would be the best approach (installing it or leaving it in RAM)?

I once used a minimal install of Debian for these sorts of things, but I switched to using Tiny Core two years ago. Debian and Ubuntu have more packages than Tiny Core, so if you need something TC doesn't have you must build it yourself or ask someone else to do it.

I have a VM with 16MB of memory (10MB free) serving web pages via lighttpd, as an extreme example. The low memory footprint is a key factor for me as I have many VMs.

The best answer to your questions is to set up one system of each and do performance testing.
