Title: hard drive install

I am at the moment running CrunchBang#! on a 6 year old desktop. But i would really like to install Tiny Core as the sole Operating System on my pc. As there is already a Primary + Swop partition on the hard drive it means i wouldn't have to mess around with partitions? So is there someone who would like to help me get Tiny Core onto my hard drive or point me to an easy to follow tutorial please.

Tiny Core is just 2 files, and the installation instructions on the web site show the grub boot entry needed to boot it.

You can skip the parts about setting up partitions.


There have been some updates in recent versions which make it even easier. These guides need to be updated.

You can get a file manager by clicking on the file manager icon in the wbar at the bottom. Another option is to open the terminal and type "fluff"

To work as administrator, open the terminal and type "sudo fluff"

For a text editor you can select Editor from the menu. Another option is to open the terminal and type "editor"

To work as administrator, open the terminal and type "sudo editor"

For people not familiar with vi, editor is easier.


If you have an Ext3 filesystem, use grub-0.97-splash.

If you have an Ext4 filesystem, use grub2. Grub-0.97-splash may not work on an Ext4 filesystem.


As you go through the setup process, if you have any specific questions, ask them here. Many people are helpful.

There should be no issues with grub 0.97 and ext4, is it broken for you?

I have tried to use grub-0.97-splash with ext4, and it did not work.

I reformatted to ext3 and it worked.

I did not spend a lot of time experimenting.

Do others have grub-0.97-splash working with ext4?

BTW, syslinux version 4.* has support for ext4 as well, and LILO should work being oblivious to fs.

HI: As far as I know - you need grub2 to boot from ext4
the 0.97 only works with ext3. grub2 is more complicated.

some of the new distris use ext4 plus grub2 as default.
