Title: Appsaudit: Why do some functions take so long?
Post by: jur on June 03, 2010, 12:47:33 AM
When doing a check for updates in AppsAudit, the window freezes for a very long time, like 10-20 minutes (although I have never actually timed it). This seems extraordinarily long.

Likewise update dep files is a never-ending wait.

Build reporting database can also take quite long, many many minutes although sometimes it is OK.

The weird thing is, the average internet data speed during these operations is very low, 1kb/s or something like that, according to the gauge I have running on Conky. Conversely, when downloading big apps, download speed can go to 500kB/s. So I have the bandwidth but tc-update is sloooooooow.

Are these observations commonplace?

Seems to me it would be advantageous to have a dep db file that can be downloaded, and compared locally very quickly.

I would suspect a DNS problem.
Maybe try a different name server, such as 8.8.8.8.

Where would I apply such an experiment? And how could I confirm a problem? In general, I can ping google.com and it responds in an average of 300ms, down to the 50ms range. Web browsing also seems OK generally, it's just the above 2 or 3 problems I have.

Name servers are defined in /etc/resolv.conf.
