Title: Tinycore as a Mobile OS ?
Post by: Pats on December 29, 2009, 06:13:42 AM
I do not know much abt OSs , but while discussing with friends , I was just wondering if TCL can be evolved as an OS for Mobiles with more than 20MB RAM !
Just a thought & curiosity ! :)

First problem that comes to mind is that the current version of TC is compiled for x86 whereas phones almost universally use ARM chipsets. Doubtless there are other problems as well.

But sir, somewhere in the news I read some Mobile Co. is venturing into Linux only handheld device - may be google will give details !
Sometime back I had used internet browsing via a 1.44MB floppy with linux on it !
So I thought if Linux can fit on a small 1.44MB floppy, then why not on a modern Mobile device !!

It has nothing to do with size. Chipset architectures are completely unrelated to storage methods. ARM and x86 are different chipsets. They use a different set of instructions to run applications, and software compiled using one set of instructions will not work on a chipset using a different set.

It IS possible to compile and run linux on mobile devices - Check out Maemo, Nokia N900, Google Android, Moblin. These are all linux or linux variants, but they have been compiled specifically for mobile architectures. But TC in it's present form will not work on handheld devices.

Actually I had not read the thread - Arm processor version -. I can now understand creating an OS for Mobiles is not that easy.
By the way - but TCL can try its hand on Compact Mobile Browser on experimental basis - if time permits to any of the Devlp Team member ! I think Open Source Code may be already avaiable for some Mobile Browser...

Also, 20M is probably not be sufficient enough (see TC FAQ)
