Title: How to restore what I backed up?
Post by: jwmollman on August 09, 2009, 10:49:04 PM
I successfully installed TC v2.2 on my EeePC 1000HA. I downloaded and installed the Minefield extension, but when I wanted to do a system restart, it told me to check the options for backing up/restoring. I set my backup destination to /dev/sda1/. Once I did that, I clicked "Backup". It took a few seconds, but it must have saved that destination. Anyway, once I went to restart, it had a little terminal dialog box that showed the progress backing up. Once it was done, my system rebooted, but it returned to the desktop as if there was a fresh install of TC, and Minefield was not in the wbar.

I want to backup my system on the hard drive, but how would I do that?

Thanks,
John

You don't backup and restore extensions, e.g., Minefiield).
Extensions are static and it would take way too long.

Extensions should be stored in a directory typically named tce on a physical disk.

Use boot code tce=sda1

Then using appbrowser extenisions will be placed in the tce directory on /dev/sda1
They will be reloaded/mounted on boot.

You should read http://www.tinycorelinux.com/concepts.html
It is all explained there. I would recommend a PPR with tce and tcz extensions.

If your eee uses 1024x600 then grab 915resolution extension, it will setup that resolution
OSS sound extension works well with eee too.

Okay I will give that a try. Also, one of the members on the IRC channel told me I should add 'restore=sda1' to the file /mnt/sda1/boot/grub/menu.lst, is this right?

EDIT: I did a restart and it restored my default wallpaper color (I changed it to orange), but I still don't see Minefield appearing in the wbar. Am I getting the wrong concept of Tiny Core possibly?

What do you mean "downloaded and installed"?
If you did a download followed by a local install, it will not auto install on boot.
You will have to move the minefield extension and its dependencies
from the optional directory into the tce directory.

I clicked the "Install Selected" option on the extension. I think I'm used to the concept of what you do with your computer "install files, edit things, the normal" is restored on startup. I understand that's a little different with Tiny Core, and that's what I can't grasp.
