Did it work with the regular wireless extension?  I see a rt73usb driver.  Not sure how this gets configured ( with "rausb0" ?)

yes, and it's seen as wlano.
It needs rt73.bin under /lib/firmware.
Doesn't work on 1.x

I don't see that in the file list for wireless-2.6.29.1-tinycore.tcem. It has the same rt73 driver as mod.
