Good day , I am new to linux but hold in age. My English writing is bad but I need some help.
I start using Linux 37 days ago and tried many distro. I like yours because it is only module
you want.On all the distro I tried Ubuntu Xfce,Lunbutu and Pupy are my best and yours is the best so far.
Now I talk about my problem,I do not have internet connection and it isthe set up I do not understand.
My internet card use the Wifi ATH5K But I do not know how to set it up with The Wifi.
I supose on service I need to chose one of thu 3 options and on netwo I need Wlan0 and ip adress but I do not
Know where to put the SSID and the VPA2 can you help.
Tank you
-
If you use the Core Plus version, it will likely work, all my wifi work with that version.
-
I tried with 3 version (core with FLWM topside , X|GUI + Wifi ext. , X|GUI +Wifi + Firmware )
none of them work.
When I set-up the net in the window for network I write ( interface: Wlan0 , DHCP: no , IP: 192.168.0.144
Mask,Broadcast and Gateway fill by themself .
Name Servers : VIDEOTRON6094 and the second space my password.
Save :yes Apply
On the services window I do not know what to chose crond, dhcp or tftpd , when I chose dhcp in the network windoww
I am not able to fill any informations.
Tank-you for your time and the info.
P.S. My Wifi and my computer are working good , I send this message whit it on pupy distro but I will prefere to use TinyCore.
-
What WiFi hardware do you have?
-
Controler NVIDIA corporation MCP77 , Ethernet (rev A2)
Qualcomm Atheros AR242x Wireless Network Adapteur (PCI-Express) (Rev 01)
and the computer is a Compaq Presario CQ50Z notebook PC
and it is working with ath5k
tank you for your time

Hello althus
Is best to start with a basic GUI desktop without "Wifi" from coreplus.iso then add your firmware and wifi extension
I understand the ATH5K linux driver doesn't require any firmware however this is the atheros firmware if needed.
tce-load -i firmware-atheros.tcz
tce-load -i wifi.tcz
In that order, then run wifi from the icon or from the command line
sudo wifi.sh
then check
dmesg
for any errors
You can upload the important dmesg output here
dmesg | tail -20
Ordmesg | tail -20 > dmesg.txt
and look for the file in your home directory
-
Ok,I am not a wis and actualy internet is not working on Wifi or cable.
I download a new Tiny core and try all the combo I can think of.
Stil no go. I write the dmesg from the start up of the computer concerning ATH5K
Can`t disale ASPM;OS doesn`t have ASPM control
Register as `phy0`
ATH5K:phy0:Atheros AR2425 chip found.
I wish this will give you some clue.
thank you for the help you give me

Hello
We need more info as previously mentioned,
load wifi extension
tce-load -i wifi.tcz
Then
sudo wifi.sh
Finally use the command
dmesg | tail -20
and post the results please
-
Hi coreplayer2
... Finally use the command
dmesg | tail -20
and post the results please
It looks like althus is copying messages by hand. I would suggest:
dmesg | tail -20 > dmesg.txt
This way althus has a file called dmesg.txt that he can copy to a thumb drive and attach to his next post.
-
Thanks rich. This is exactly my earlier suggestion too
But he’s new to linux and just finding his way around

hello althus
I don't see anything wrong here, did you try running wifi from it's icon or from the command line first?
first run
sudo wifi.sh
then
dmesg > dmesg.txt
next run
lsmod > lsmod.txt
also this
rfkill list all > rfkill.txt
You're looking for this
tc@box:~$ rfkill list all
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
tc@box:~$
and attach all to next post please
-
Hi coreplayer2
This guys dmesg looks almost identical to the OPs:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2351377
Right down to the forcedeth driver for the nVidia Ethernet hardware. Search (Ctrl-F) the page for ar2425.

Good day ,I think The problem is not so deep in the system.
Normaly with other distro for the Wifi to be operational I write in a Windoww
SSID__VIDEOTRON6094 and WPA2 security key XXXXXXX (X are number and leters )
On tiny-core the windoww for network configuration did not ask for those questions
and I am sory but did not know where to put those two information nessary for
the system to operate. Please accept my excuses if I put you on the wrong track.
Tank you for your time ,Have a good day
-
Hello althus
This is tinycorelinux not just another linux system [emoji12].
Writing the SSID and wpa information is not necessary with the wifi command in tinycore
We suspect your WiFi hardware switch is faulty. As this is a common fault in old notebooks.
When resolved, the wifi app will present you with a list of access points available, then you enter the passphrase to connect.
Please we need all information requested Especially this info please
rfkill list all > rfkilllist.txt

Hi althus
If you are trying to use this:
then you are using the wrong tool. You need to:
sudo wifi.sh
Read coreplayer2s last post (http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,23095.msg144552.html#msg144552) again and follow his instructions.
-
I was using the wrong tool :-[
I will send the info ASAP
Tank you you are fast and patient.
The file dmesg.txt is 37k do you want it full or the last 20 lines.
The rfkill.txt is empty, and lsmod.txt is 1k I send it in the post below with the last 20 lines of dmesg.txt

Hi Coreplayer2
as an old electronic tech. can you tell me if you suspect a problem
with the wifi hardware switch why the same switch did not affect
LubuntuLinux , Xfce4Linux or pupyLinux use on the same notebook.
I want to understand.
Tank you again
-
Hello althus
sorry the rfkill output is empty, it's because neither rfkill.tcz or util-linux.tcz is installed, my bad.
Since util-linux has a few dependencies I think it's better to download " rfkill.tcz " somehow then copy it to your tce/optional directory, then install it.
tce-load -i rfkill.tcz
Remember installing one time like this only installs for this session. adding rfkill.tcz to onboot.lst will install on every reboot.
tce-load -wi rfkill.tcz
will download, load and add to onboot.lst but you'd have to be online for that..
Then try again
rfkill list all > rfkilllist.txt
Notebooks of this era almost always have this Wifi switch problem, it was either a BIOS option or a physical slide switch (in modern notebooks is F11 or F12) intended to save battery life. What makes this issue particularly inconvenient is this hardware kill switch must be disabled before loading the driver which is most likely not the case.
Don't fall in love with this hardware, it's really old and uses unreliable drivers. One alternative is you can load ndiswrapper.tcz extension then use it to load the ath5k windows driver.
maybe other distro's use the madwifi drivers?
Honestly I wouldn't even tinker with it, because at it's best is only using an outdated 802.11bg specification with a maximum bandwidth of only 54 Mbps. Today we enjoy simultaneous connections across 2.4 and 5ghz bands with speed up to 1300 mbps for a $20 adapter, Ok an AC wifi adapter might cost a little more...
Assuming we have a fairly recent modem (within last 3 years) it will be at least Wireless N capable, in which case get a compatible $20 miniature USB wireless adapter and you'll enjoy reliable and fast connections.
There was a time I bought every wireless USB adapter on the market to determine which were supported, however since manufacturers flooded the market with basic Wireless N (150) USB adapters it's impossible to keep up. So I couldn't tell you which brand to get, but I think it would be hard to find an adapter which isn't supported because wireless support has improved dramatically in last few years.
If you still find justification in getting this hardware to work, then we have to fix the kill switch.

Tank you Coreplayer2
Actualy I do not Know how I will download rfkill.tcz
and copy it to tce/optional directory but I will try.
I have a lot of study to do and for now I will read
TinyCore book.
Tank you for your time
I will be back ASAP.

Hello althus
No dep's needed so you can simply download from here

Good morning,
someting unusual hapen yesterday morning.
Friday evening I shut off my main computer, and yesterday morning when I turn it on tinycorelinux was on it. Normaly on this computer window10 is the OS.
The problem is I never load Tinycore on this machine. I use the computer to download
Tinycore and made a USB bootable whit rufus 3.5 .
Now I do not know how to solve that problem any ideas???
Computer HP Pavillon p6230f
8 Gb Ram , CPU speed 2.6 Ghz
-
Hi althus
Was the USB device still plugged in when you turned on the computer?
-
Hello
First remove any CD in the cd/dvd player
Then shut down the computer
Next remove the USB stick
Lastly start your pc
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Hi coreplayer2
Nice catch. I forgot about the CD.
-
Sory , I was not clear
I do no have a CD or USB on the computer and I Did not use my USB key whit
TinyCore on that computer except to make it .
I never load Tiny core on the HD of any computer.
But I know TinyCore is on my HD and is starting when I put the computer On.
If you had a similar problem and find the solution tell me but I will use a repair
window disk to boot and I think it will fix the probleme.
I have to wait for my friend to be back from holiday.
P.S.For my Wifi problem I tink you are writhe for the switch non servicable.
Tank you for your help
-
Ok just a small question
If I can go in the consol , I will be able to erase TinyCorp from my HD ???
-
Hi althus
... I do no have a CD or USB on the computer and I Did not use my USB key whit
TinyCore on that computer except to make it .
I never load Tiny core on the HD of any computer.
But I know TinyCore is on my HD and is starting when I put the computer On. ...
If you don't have a CD (or DVD) in the computer, and you don't have a USB "key" plugged in, then the only explanation I see is
that you installed it to your hard drive.
... The problem is I never load Tinycore on this machine. I use the computer to download
Tinycore and made a USB bootable whit rufus 3.5 . ...
Did you need to run Rufus more than once because the USB key did not not work the first time? Maybe you accidentally pointed
Rufus to your hard drive instead of your USB key one time?
... If I can go in the consol , I will be able to erase TinyCorp from my HD ???
Before you go trying to make any changes, execute this command and post what's in fdisk.txt:
fdisk -l > fdisk.txt
That's a lower case L after the dash.
-
Ok, it will be hard my TC work only in tc@box and I do not know how to have it in graphic.
for the answer of fdisk
/dev/sda1 size 100M NTFS
/dev/sda2 size 685G NTFS
/dev/sda3 size 450M unknown
/dev/sda4 size 13.0G Win95 fat32 (LBA)
Disk /dev/sda 699GB nb of bytes,nb of sectors, nb cylinders, and all the thing in a HD.
I supose sda4 is not supose to be there ?
-
if I give the command ( ls .. ) the answer is tc/ so actualy tc is on the HD
because noting is connected on the computer.
thank you for the help you give me so far
-
Hi althus
... I supose sda4 is not supose to be there ?
I'm not sure. Sometimes computer manufacturers have a nasty habit of using up all 4 partitions. I want to get a better picture of
what's going on:
df -h | head > info.txt
blkid /dev/sro >> info.txt
blkid /dev/sr1 >> info.txt
readlink /etc/sysconfig/tcedir >> info.txt
-
Maybe we can cut down these variables:
My own Compaq Presario is one step up: a CQ60. I haven't put TC on a stick to boot but when I get a chance I will. Currently booting Devuan on hd with it. Time for TC on a stick I suppose ....
The ops machine was originally installed with Windows Vista. Seems like one or more Linux installations (and bootloader) have been applied to it.
Rufus will *NOT* install to any internal disk, just external usb only by design - precisely to not mess with any existing installation on internal drives. You can't even fool it.
RFKILL - my '60Z presario is also afflicted. But merely loading rfkill doesn't fix anything. At some point, either manually, or in a script, it requires
sudo rfkill unblock all
Now, a wireless script (or network manager) will work. The physical switch will still not work, but either a script or network manager will allow for the connection to be made, and the led in the switch will light up. Just saying, that the use of rfkill to unblock all won't make the switch work physically - but it will when networking software tries to use it.
One will also want the synaptics touchpad driver. Again, just loading it wont' fix it, but in a script, one should apply
synclient TapButton1=1
to get it functional with double-clicks at least.
I'll give my own '60z a shot when I get some more time.
-
hi ,rich
I have done all the command you give me
and now I have an info.txt file in my directory
but how do I put the file on a USB or how I open it
Actualy I am in the consol tc@box and I am new to consol
and know little of the command.
For the command df -h the answer is
filesystem size used awailable use % mounted on
rootfs 1.6 G 14.6 M 1.6G 1% /
tempfs 1.6 G 0 1.6G 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda4 13.1 G 222.2M 12.9G 2% /mnt/sda4
I wish that can help.
-
hi PDP-8
tank you for your help,I will try your solution.
-
Heh, hang tight - I'm working on it right now.
One thing we know for sure: Rufus will easily burn a bootable usb. For simplicity, I used the latest 32 bit tinycore.iso. And just let Rufus do it's thing without having to specify anything special.
As usual, before taking the stick out of the Windows box, I went into the file manager and changed the name of the "cde" directory to "tce", and now we have instant persistence since this is no longer a cd type of install. There's more, but this is no problem.
I noticed that out of the box the touchpad driver allows for double-taps so basic functionality is there without having to load the synaptics driver. We can of course, to get two-finger slides and whatnot, but for now, let's leave the synaptics touchpad driver out of the equation.
working on more ...
-
hi ,rich
I have done all the command you give me
and now I have an info.txt file in my directory
but how do I put the file on a USB or how I open it
You missed the last three commands
df -h | head > info.txt

blkid /dev/sr1 >> info.txt
readlink /etc/sysconfig/tcedir >> info.txt
Each line is to be executed separately

Hey PDP-8
Please let’s not get to far ahead of ourselves, before running a script to fix the issue don’t you think it’s better to establish the problem first?
rfkill list all > rfkilllist.txt
Will establish if there’s a switch problem to fix
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Got the 60z Presario up and running. I've been wanting to do this, so thanks Althus for prodding me.
We only need to download three things and put them in our onboot.lst:
1) rfkill.tcz
2) firmware-atheros.tcz
3) wifi.tcz
NOTE: I'm assuming that one is using a wired ethernet and the APPS program to download and install these programs and all their automatically downloaded related dependencies, not just cherry-picking only these three from a download repository!
RFKILL fun:
On this machine(s), before we try to use rfkill, we press and hold the wifi button for 2 seconds. Even though the led status color light does not change, rfkill will now work properly on it.
If you try to use rfkill *before* holding down the button for 2 seconds, partial unblocking may drive you insane.
At the terminal (after you have pressed the wifi button for 2 secs and released)
sudo rfkill unblock all
Now fire up the wifi icon, and it will scan and display access points. And the wifi led will turn blue instead of orange. Upon disconnect, it will turn orange again.
Sure enough, one might try to use rfkill without hitting the switch, and see only one softblock removed, and the rest still hardblocked. 'Gotta wake up the switch physically before to make it work all the way.
sudo rfkill list
But hitting the wifi button for 2 seconds, and not having the switch provide any feedback is un-intuitive.
Run sudo rfkill unblock all, and you will see them all unblocked now. Sure enough, the Atheros wifi works fine.

To PDP-8
Tank you for your answer I will try your solution later on.
I should have open an other post actually I am working on my mane computer
where TC install itself.
Tank you for your help.
For Coreplayer2
like I said in the previous post I write the command on my consol and
execute them one at the time but even if I have a file "info.txt "
I do not know how to read it or to copy it on a USB to transfere it on my
laptop to send it to you. I copy my last post on the screen of the computer.
I takk you for your time and apologize for my missing formation.
P.S. Sory I forget the command "cat" . I will send you a copy tomorow.
-
Ok coreplayer2
I put the command "cat" for file info.txt
filesystem size used awailable use % mounted on
rootfs 1.6 G 14.6 M 1.6G 1% /
tempfs 1.6 G 0 1.6G 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda4 13.1 G 222.2M 12.9G 2% /mnt/sda4
/mnt/sda4/tce
you are looking at a complete copy
have a nice evening.
-
Hi althus
... like I said in the previous post I write the command on my consol and
execute them one at the time but even if I have a file "info.txt "
I do not know how to read it or to copy it on a USB to transfere it on my

Plug in a USB drive. Then:
mount /mnt/sdb1
cp info.lst /mnt/sdb1
sync
sudo umount /mnt.sdb1
The file should now be on your USB drive.
... for the answer of fdisk
/dev/sda1 size 100M NTFS
/dev/sda2 size 685G NTFS
/dev/sda3 size 450M unknown
/dev/sda4 size 13.0G Win95 fat32 (LBA)
sda2 is probably your Windows partition.
filesystem size used awailable use % mounted on
rootfs 1.6 G 14.6 M 1.6G 1% /
tempfs 1.6 G 0 1.6G 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda4 13.1 G 222.2M 12.9G 2% /mnt/sda4
/mnt/sda4/tce
sda4 looks like where you installed Tinycore to.
It sounds like you might have clicked on and run tcinstall:
Do these images in this link look familiar:
http://tinycorelinux.net/install.html#1_
At any rate, it sounds like you wiped out the MBR (Master Boot Record) and or the boot loader. The Windows repair disk should be
able to fix that. You do not need to reinstall Windows.
-
Tank you a lot for all the time you spend to answer my questions
I appreciate a lot. I will use the repair disk window as soon as possible
and let you knoww the result.I just have to wait a couple of days.
Tanks again.
-
We only need to download three things and put them in our onboot.lst:
firmware-atheros.tcz
I think you’re looking at different hardware as there is no firmware blob for the ath5k wifi driver
At present I don’t see any firmware file that could be of benefit to ath5k adaptor, but that’s why we want to test the wifi one time without loading firmware-atheros.tcz

Thanks coreplayer2! You are correct - I don't need the atheros firmware loaded at all.
So in a Monty-Python type of recall - you only need TWO things - rfkill and wifi tcz
my dmesg shows an
Atheros AR9285 Rev:2 for the ieee80211 wireless and works with no firmware tcz needed.
So thanks for that! I'll bet althus' presario is similar.

Thanks PDP-8 and Coreplayer2
I fix my main computer and my wife is happy.
Now I will work on my old portable with TC.
When you start TC you have 13 choices if you chose #1 and you want
to go on TTY1 or consol 1 without using the terminal What is the command.
On most of ubuntu you use ctrl+alt+f1 and you are in and to go out ( f7 )
do you have command like that on TC??
I learn That with choise #12 you are in console mode How do you go back
in graphique mode from there. If you have to shut off the computer and
start it back on do you have a command like exit before turning the switch to off ??
Is all that information is in the TC book and all the 13 choices explain for newbe ??
Thank you for your answers.

You would have to load the required graphic extensions.

It does not talk about menu choices for the CD but it does contain a lot of useful information unique to Tinycore Linux.

For some general Linux knowledge, maybe try this:
https://rlworkman.net/howtos/rute/
Skip straight to chapter 4.
For information specific to Tinycore, definitely read this:
http://tinycorelinux.net/corebook.pdf

Tanks a lot Rich
I will fallow the advice.
Have a good day
