It's lightweight and has a friendly, Windows 3.1-esque UI. Minimized applications turn into icons on the desktop, making them easier to recover than in, say, Openbox or FLWM. Also it just looks retro.

Is it open source?

It used to be closed-source, but was recently made open source.

Hi daniel l.
It used to be closed-source, but was recently made open source.
Maybe you could provide a link to the source files?
-
I found some links. Not sure if they're good, though.
https://github.com/stackfield/mwm
https://github.com/spartrekus/MWM-Motif-Window-Manager-FreeBSD-Linux
I believe you can also fetch the sources from the Debian repository. https://packages.debian.org/stretch/mwm

Notice is shown at the bottom of https://motif.ics.com/
