it did not want to 'Backup' automatically so I went to control panel and tried to use 'backup/restore'
The window had a header:-
Backup Restore and list Maintenance
then a response box called Device: opens
what should I put in it..... (Installed onto sda I think, I formatted it to ext4 )
A puzzled,

Hello Tim036
Backup and Restore manages the backup lists filetool.lst and xfiletool.lst
see http://wiki.tinycorelinux.net/wiki:backup (http://wiki.tinycorelinux.net/wiki:backup)
iirc the command line tool " filetool.sh -b " will create a backup file where one doesn't exist already
If you've installed to a HDD then you might choose to make opt and home persistent, which to me is preferable to a backup but it's your preference.. depends on how you configure your system. see here http://wiki.tinycorelinux.net/wiki:start#persistence (http://wiki.tinycorelinux.net/wiki:start#persistence)

Many thanks for quick response...

Well, I'm struggling to understand how to do the tasks that are easy the second time ! *LOL*
The info seemed to say 'this' is possible but without saying how. I think Tiny Core is brilliant ! And by trying to get it working on different very old laptops I'm learning.
Maybe its just a jargon thing, or that I'm a bit dim. Perhaps I just make the same mistake each time I try and install onto the Hard Disk.
I find tc-install.tcz in the Application / icloud/ browse as a starting place, selection 3 down from ON Boot option. And all goes well following pages 11 to 17, but it doesn't always do as this guide suggests.
Maybe because its overwriting Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit and so I've just wiped that by putting XP onto the hard disc.
I'll try again. in an hour and see if I can meet with success.
Many thanks for every ones patience with me.

it did not want to 'Backup' automatically so I [...]
edit your ~/.profile file and change
export BACKUP=1
to
export BACKUP=0
Then do filestool.sh -b and after next reboot, it won't backup automatically on exit.

The easiest way to understand Tinycore is to browse the book, is just a few pages but covers all the important aspects in clear and light reading
Download a copy and keep it handy

I have a complete copy of it. Its understanding is the problem.
On my latest attempt it boots to:-
tc@box:~$
Not the nice GUI !
Corrupt CD ? Broken Cd drive, faulty computer ?
I'm a bit short of ideas ! *LOL*
But I'll continue as I have it running well on a different Laptop.

How did you install? and from what exactly did you install from?
-
I used:-
CorePlus-current.iso
Its going onto an IBM Thinkpad which has 35GB of usable HD space formatted with XP Ntfs with ethernet pluged in.
I'm doing it now so its in ral time (for me anyway) 12.22pm
WiFi + Firmware selected 12.29pm
booting core.gz 12.30pm
Normal window opens 12.30pm
fasted mirror selected 12.32pm
Apps selected 12.32pm
Cloud remote browse selected 12.33pm
tc-install selected 12.34pm Now the two adjustables seen as On Boot and Set, I've changed On Boot to :- Download + Load and clicked Go 12.37pm
a window has opened calledtce-load has opened.
Status has changed to tc-install.tcz OK 12,28pm I've assumed to write this to the hard disc i have to click Set
it has offered me
/mnt/fd0
/mnt/sda1
refering to pages 12 to 17 of manual 12.42pm
Don't know which to choose so going for sda1
going to screen and looking at 'on demand' but found TC_Install ikon so clicking on that 12.47pm
its asking me path to core with same diagram on page 12 of manual
selected mnt/ and clicking on that
its showing me
../
fd0/
sda1/
sr0/
sr1/
so clicking on sda1/ and it yields
../
Documents and Settings/
Program Files/
System Volume Informat/
WINDOWS/
don't like that 12.53pm so clicking on ../
it displays
../
fd0/
sda1/
sr0/
sr1/
so trying sr0
nothing there so going back to ../
and trying fd0/
nothing there so trying sr1/
boot/ showed up so trying that 12.58pm
core.gz selected
Options selected
Frugal
Whole Disk
sr1
Install boot loader13.01hrs
right hand arrow chose ext4 then rh arrow diagram on page 14 of manual lead to diagram in page 15 of manual
selected top option then wifi support, wireless firmware, remaster tool, non-us keyboard
similar to diag page 16 of manual:-
Source:- /mnt/sr1/boot/core.gz
Type Frugal
Target sr1
Format ext4
Options:-
install X GUI
Install WiFi support
Install WiFi Firmware
Install Wireless Firmware
Install Remaster Tool
Install Support for Non-US Keyboards
I click proceed
next screen says
sr1 appears to have a partion alreadymounted !
Check if correct device , if so if so unmount it and run installer again !!!!!
13.14hrs
I've no idea what went wrong or how to follow their recommendation
HELP !!!!
-
/dev/fd0 = floppy disk
/dev/sda1 = hard disk first (and probably only) partition
/dev/sr0 = cd/dvd drive
/dev/sr1 = second cd/dvd drive? or maybe other mass storage
I would suggest installing to a usb stick (as long as your machine will boot from this) until you get the hang of tinycore.
Otherwise, you could use gparted to shrink your current xp partition and create a second, linux, partition on your hard disk and install tinycore to that. This runs the risk of making xp unbootable if you make a mistake...
-
Wiping XP would be a pleasure. But using Gparted has not been successful in creating an acceptable partition for Tiny Core installer. I have tried that several times.
I would prefer to find out what I did wrong. And fix that. The laptop is still running so when a pointer comes my way I can try it out on the place where I got the error message.
There should be enough information for the error to be spotted. ???
Many many thanks for responding ! For me its a steep learning curve and I want to stay with this until it works.
Many thanks again.

If you don't care about the xp partition, then use fdisk to delete the xp partition and create a new linux partition(s) on the hard disk and use tc-install on that.
If I recall correctly, tc-install has an option to wipe the selected partition (use sda1 in your case)

Hi Tim036
According to this:
similar to diag page 16 of manual:-
Source:- /mnt/sr1/boot/core.gz
Type Frugal
Target sr1
Format ext4
Options:-
install X GUI
Install WiFi support
Install WiFi Firmware
Install Wireless Firmware
Install Remaster Tool
Install Support for Non-US Keyboards
your target is sr1 when it should have been sda1.
-
Ah ! I'll check that out on the log and see if I can fig it...
Many many thanks Rich.
: ))
Tim
-
sr1 is definitely were I found core.gz
Now just above my time stamp 13.01hrs was sr1
I changed that sda and got the same error message...
???
checking that out....
Tim
-
Many thanks,
If my installation is correct apart from the the target needing to be sda1, I'm lost...
With GParted I can delete whats there and leave it blank.
Is that OK?
: )))

hi Tim036
Source:- /mnt/sr1/boot/core.gz
is your CD
Target sr1
target should be sda1 (which is the first hdd partition seen by linux)
From the core book pages 11 through 17 is all you need at this point
if gparted operation is confusing you then don't use it stick to the diagrams in the book
-
well it winged at me saying it was mounted.
Maybe a power down and power up again will fix it.
Run out of time today, but I'm sure we are getting a lot closer...
Many many thanks to all the members of this Forum who have help !

Major improvements !!!
I took the hard disc out of the Thinkpad laptop and put an old 250GB hard drive in a powered USB gismo and lo... the install went just fine !
I think the Thinkpad has issues unique to itself for the internal drive, but I could be wrong. About to try and install on an SD card.
There are some APP for the thinkpad but not yet investigated what they do.
I found this 250GB hard drive would run just fine on any PC I had laying about which didn't have a hard disc in ! That opens up its uses even more !
Many thanks to all who have helped me !!!!!
