Title: Board Suggestion for home NAS
Post by: Zendrael on October 28, 2015, 07:42:47 AM
Hello!

I want to build a home NAS with 2 SATA HDDs and want to know if anyone can suggest the best board that works with the Core for this?

Pi 1, Pi2, Cubieboard, Odroid...

Thanks

I have friends using Raspberry Pi as a home NAS and mail server with USB HDD and they are happy with it. For sure it is less reliable and slower than direct SATA connected drives, but reported to be stable and working fine.

In such case you can use piCore as well. Even you can set up Raid array, use a multi disk Btrfs, etc.

Hey bmarkus!

And do you know of a good wireless module or dongle that works fine with piCore?

Many. Better to ask which one doesn't work. I have a 150Mbps TP-LINK TL-WN721N which works fine, but is only one of the many:

I'd advise against using any of the cheap arm boards for such use. Current Atom boards don't use much more electricity, and their reliability is on a different level.

If the issue is cost and not power, AMD's low-power AM1 cpu + mobo can be had new for similar cost to many ARM boards.

Hey curaga!

I have to find such boards with AMD in my country as even the SBC's are expensive here (four times the price in US dollar).

Will check for them too! Thanks!

Or buy a dedicated NAS box. It may look more expensive, but if you count housing ready to accomodate HDD's power supply, ready software it may worth.

Sure, but as I said, the prices here are very high - building that kind of hardware by myself usually is more cheaper than buy a complete one. I'm in Brazil...
