Did you check that the sliders in alsamixer were un-muted?
What hardware do you have?

yup , did
those with mm . i had pressed m to unmute .
Currently this is happening
$sudo /usr/local/etc/init.d/alsasound start
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory
Something went wrong, sound was not set up.
$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
$
that bar graph type output is not appearing .
How do I find hardware ?

turns out that alsamixer malfunctions after this
$ sudo /usr/local/etc/init.d/alsasound start

Your hardware will probably "just work" on loading the alsa extension and using alsamixer to un-mute the desired output.
You could use something simple like xmms to play an mp3 to test things (use ctrl-p to set the output to alsa).
