Unfortunately I have to use skype as a home worker (company standards) so can not upgrade to 5.x without it. My own tcz from Skype-static works fine in 4.x but I guess the libs are not compatible with 5.x because I get a segmentation fault. Likewise attempting to use getSkype from 4.x repo which is a neater solution.
Thanks,
Harvey
-
Where do you get the segfault? If it's inside Skype, and there is no newer version, I'm afraid there's nothing we could do as the bug would be theirs.
-
I think Skype needs QT4.7
-
Skype is a useful program to have, I can say it for myself too. My situation is exactly the same as for the OP. So, here is my +1
-
qt-4.x is now in the 5.x repo - did you try getskype from the tc-4.x repo in tc-5.x?
-
Skype created with the TC4 getskype works OK on TC5 using qt-4.x-base.tcz
-
Thanks - getskype copied to the 5.x repo
-
getSkype reports errors connection errors when initially run. persisting may result in a selection of skype versions top download, unfortunately this next error is a show stopper
Skype-static reports missing dep "tiff3.tcz" and of course will not run.
getSkype is in need of some attention :-[
-
if loaded from Apps, then Apps will crash, become unresponsive and will require Xkill to close.
Also, missing qt-4.x-dbus.tcz remains an issue

getskype ran.
The skype-static that is downloaded apparently is not as static as claimed.
-
I can't test as skype and any skype site is blocked here.
There are both getskype and getSkype extensions in the 4.x repo - maybe there was some confusion between the two?
-
The resulting Skype (not static this time) created with getskype produces this error when run
skype
/usr/local/bin/skype-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libQtDBus.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
perhaps we need getSkype extension??
Will try later but meanwhile I got to run..
-
Ongoing skype saga..
getskype runs but have not found a completed Skype version which runs without error even after modifying deps

current status
getskype > select 2.2.0.0.35 (static)
change dep file to load:
fontconfig.tcz
glib2.tcz
libasound.tcz
libv4l.tcz
xdg-utils.tcz
Xorg-7.7-lib.tcz
qt-4.x-base.tcz is not required with skype2.2-static
Skype now runs but I'm having multiple pulse audio errors, which is odd considering pulse audio is not installed.. (note: turns out pulse audio is installed though not configured or used, will remove it asap)

Ok finally got Skype to perform on tc5.3 (x86 only) at least as far a text messaging, will try speech soon
getskype > select 2.2.0.0.35 (static)
change dep file to load:
fontconfig.tcz
glib2.tcz
libasound.tcz
libv4l.tcz
xdg-utils.tcz
Xorg-7.7-lib.tcz
By default, getskype.tcz creates skype and installs "OnDemand" for some reason
-
sound also works using Alsa, though the default option was not correct. After selecting the correct S/PDIF ouput Skype sound test functioned properly
-
Thanks for adding to 5.x +all the other replies. I'd given up and carried on in TC 4.x but now the much publicised blocking of old skype versions probably renders all this redundant, no version of skype-static works and we have to wrestle with skype 4.3 for named distros. I have found that Ubuntu debs convert to tcz most successfully, now just have to get pulseaudio working but thats a whole other topic. I'll try *that* in TC 5.x.

Sorry to be a PITA but tried Skype in in TC 5.0 now and we are missing some qt-4 libs:
libQtDBus.so.4 - not found
libQtWebKit.so.4 - not found
libQtGui.so.4 - provided by qt-4.x-base
libQtCore.so.4 - provided by qt-4.x-base
libQtNetwork.so.4 - provided by qt-4.x-base
libQtXml.so.4 - provided by qt-4.x-xml
I have tried using the old 4.x repo versions but then it complains ...
Fatal: Cannot mix incompatible Qt library (version 0x40704) with this library (version 0x40805)
Any chance of qt-4.x-dbus and qt-4.x-webkit compiles for TC 5.x?
-
In case anyone is interested I got the Ubuntu release of Skype 4.3 working on TC4.x. Needs the qt-4 libs (see prev post). To get sound via pulseaudio working I found the following works:
in /opt/bootsync.sh:
/usr/local/etc/init.d/dbus start
in ~/.X.d create a script called skype containing:
dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session
start-pulseaudio-x11
skype & 2>/tmp/skype.log
Those things all need to happen in the right order.
They are horribly big apps, skype takes 24% of my RAM (more than firefox) and pulse another 5% (more than Xvesa). Ruins the minimalist setup that makes TC so great in the first place.
