Hello hardcores! Today im posting a problem about setting up for those who have a Ralink 2870 wifi dongle to my

From the forums I read I already tried to modprobe rt2800 but no avail, I think it is for Realtek semicons. Any ideas how could I set up this dongle? By the way I have a .bin file driver that I get from its CD how could I convert it to a .tcz file?

rt2870.bin is contained in firmware-ralinkwifi.tcz
Also, your Ralink adapter won't show up using lspci if that's what you were expecting. You need lsusb for that which is
provided by usb-utils.tcz.

You also need to install wireless-3.8.10-tinycore.tcz if you haven't done so already.

Hi thank you and sorry for late reply, I already installed what you have said and placed it on-boot section but I still did'nt see my wireless device in ifconfig

ifconfig will only show configured interfaces.
To see them all run 'ifconfig -a'.
Check dmesg to be sure you are not missing firmware.

Your dmesg doesn't show the device connected, you might try dmesg | tail -50 to verify
If your device is a USB dongle type then try reinserting it into a different USB port then run dmesg again, the device should show up on the last few lines

Once you set the boot bode "syslog" the system messages are in /var/log/messages

edit your bootloader's configuration file, f.i. extlinux.cfg in case you use extlinux bootloader. Now simply type "syslog" as a further bootcode. Save the file and reboot your system.
Having done this follow instructions 2 through 4 given by tinypoodle.

rt2x00usb is a dependency of rt2800usb, so I'd expect it to get loaded automatically.
I agree entirely, something is a miss here and is likely due to a mix of kernel module versions (apparently there are both 3.8.10 & 3.8.13 modules installed) first plan is to update all so we're on the right page, then add syslog boot code if needed.

I tried to modprobe -v rt2800usb.ko.gz without rebooting and it enlisted in lsmod but still no wifi. And when I rebooted the module is gone after lsmod...

I'm beginning to see the problem
modinfo rt2800usb | grep 5370
reveals that in this version of the rt2800usb module there is no Alias/support for 148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter So the module will not automatically load when the device is inserted.
Am not even sure that "rt2870.bin" is the correct firmware either..
However I'd try loading
wifi.tcz and
firmware-ralinkwifi.tcz
then modprobe it

I got a Ralink RT2501/RT2573 (USB wireless adapter) working in Core Linux 477 now.
In dmesg it showed up as "rt73usb". It was automatically detected, "iwconfig" showed it as "wlan0". I had installed "firmware-ralinkwifi.tcz" from 5.x though via onboot.lst so this may have helped.
So all I had to do then was to run "sudo wifi.sh" and connect to the network. This was an open access point.
I also tried a Ralink PCI adapter before. For this I had to do "sudo modprobe rt61pci" before it showed up with iwconfig.
Also helpful was the "rfkill" utility which shows if the adapter is blocked somehow. I found that I had to press the wifi button first to remove the "hard blocked" state. After that I entered "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up" to enable the adapter.
So in your case I would do:
"sudo modprobe rt73usb" and see if it then shows up in iwconfig. If yes, enter "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up" followed by "sudo wifi.sh".

Since I used Corelinux I had to add firmware-ralinkwifi.tcz, I guess Coreplus already comes with this firmware.
What you list seems to indicate that rt73usb is loaded, but I would just try to load it anyway with "sudo modprobe rt73usb". Maybe it then shows up with iwconfig.
You may also look at dmesg after some time again. I currently have trouble with a Broadcom wifi adapter. After booting the dmesg log looked ok for me, but after unsuccessfully running wifi.sh and other tools I looked at dmesg again and there were several errors reported.
I agree that this is probably not very helpful for you.

Support for that chip, 5370, was still experimental (and still is as of 4.8), so it's disabled in our kernel.
You can either build a custom kernel, or get a better supported stick. Atheros ones are excellent.
