Title: Documentation + PPI
Post by: lverns on May 11, 2013, 10:00:03 AM
I have a question. What is a PPI?
I was under the impression that they were no longer supported under 4.x
(I don't believe I started using Core in earnest until after the release of 4.0).

If they are unsupported by 4.x, does the local= boot option still do anything? If not, shouldn't it be removed from
http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html#bootcodes
and
http://wiki.tinycorelinux.net/wiki:boot_options
?

This of course brings up the question of how to handle documentation of different versions. The wiki tends to lag behind the latest version of Core.  How much do we want to support older versions? Do we want to replace all old documentation as soon as a new version comes out? (That is obviously not going to start happening any time soon, but would it even be desirable?)

Do we want do have two different versions of the same page? One that says Applies to the 4.7.7 and one that says Applies to 3.8.4. Of course, if they were exactly the same, then we could just have one page that says Applies to 3.0 to 4.7.7 or something like that.

So what I'm really mumbling about documentation across different releases, and I'm just using PPI as an example of how these things can be confusing.

I don't have a lot of time and smarts to devote to documentation, but when I do contribute, I'd like my work to be compatible with other folk's contributions.
What are others' thoughts on this?

Cheers,
lverns

PPI support was via mktclocal and was depreciated in 4.0. See: http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,11494.msg60686.html#msg60686

It would be good to support the current series, and the latest of the previous - so if the wiki has docs for 4.x and 3.8.x, keep both, but feel free to remove anything about 3.7 or below.

If you'd like to prioritize, keeping docs current would be best, but expecting everyone to upgrade instantly is not too likely.
