Title: Tinycore Plus loading only wifi at boot?
Post by: hyfryd on April 19, 2012, 11:24:11 AM
Hello!!

I tried to run tinycore plus on a very old laptop (pentium II 64mb ram and no hardisk) from a cd but it seems that there is no enough ram to load all the extensions. I just need wifi, so i wonder if there is a boot code to load only the base system with wifi. I can load X with no extensions and then load the wifi from the app program but i supose it can be done from the boot.

thanks

david

For low-end hw you'll only want to load just the wifi extensions you need, and not all of them anyway (which any bootcode would do, if it exists; I'm not up to speed on how separate the lists are in the latest coreplus).

That is, I only want to load the wifi extension I need, and not the others or the other desktops which also i don't need.
I know there is ezremaster, which is plan B if i don't get it from boot.

Hi hyfryd
If the laptop can read a USB thumb drive, you could install the extensions you need to it. Then use the boot code
tc tce=sda1   for a GUI environment or   mc tce=sda1   for a text environment.

You can boot from CorePlus with the selection of "Boot Core with X/GUI with no extensions".
This will boot into "TinyCore" desktop.

Open an xterm from the icon at the bottom of the scree.
Then you will have to determine your cdrom's mount point. Type mount at a command prompt to determine.

Then to manually load any CorePlus extensions from the cdrom, For example say from the mount command your cdrom is mounted at /mnt/sdb, then type:

tce-load -i /mnt/sdb/cde/optional/wifi.tcz

That's it!

If you need firmware then use the same procedure to load the firmware extension. Consult the Wiki for firmware and wifi card info.

EDIT: I will add additional boot menu options to enable this in CorePlus 4.5

Thank you very much guys. I was loading the wifi.tcz from the appbrowser but the command line seems faster!! I don't need additional firmware so thats fine.
Roberts, thats very good news as well to have this as an additional menu option for Coreplus 4.5

Thanks a lot for your help

I have added three new boot menu options for CorePlus 4.5

Boot TinyCore + Install
Boot TinyCore + Wifi
Boot TinyCore + Wifi + Firmware

Of course one can use Tab to edit the desktop= to your preferred desktop.

These new options should be helpful to those with older or less memory systems as a result of this topic.

As English is not my first language, I'm not sure if your are saying that you added the new options because of this topic. If so, I have no words to express how pleasantly surprised I am.
I've been a tibycore user since the very first version when i switched from DSL and since, i've always been amazed how this has evolved and how much has improved something that to me was very good back to version 1.5 or so, which i tried for the very first time.

thanks again

David

Yes. Absolutely. We do listen, watch, and learn from community experience.
It is the actual use and feedback, such as yours, that helps us improve the "Core" experience.
