I would like to use Tiny Core Linux as my main OS but I cant get sound and java working. I don't know what to do for sound so instructions would be nice. As for java when i use the command 'java' in terminal it say it not a valid command. I have the jre 6 installed. I hope the fix is as simple as installing the jre 7 but haven't had time to try. Any help is appreciated.
Also why are there so many captchas?

Hi playmoboy
For sound, install either alsa.tcz OR OSS.tcz and be sure to read the Info tab in AppBrowser.
As for java when i use the command 'java' in terminal it say it not a valid command. I have the jre 6 installed.
That's because the path environmental variable does not include the location it's installed in.
Also why are there so many captchas?
We used to have a spam problem.

... For sound, install either alsa.tcz OR OSS.tcz and be sure to read the Info tab in AppBrowser. ...
I see in the app browser search result there are both alsa-oss.tcz & also alsa.tcz. There is no 'oss.tcz'.
I have no sound in either my laptop or in the desktop (sony VAIO and a Dell Dimension 4700), from within the OS, but I know that the hardware works in other OS's. I tried the 'lsmod | grep snd' command in the Terminal, and there was no output. I am thinking that my installation came without any sound drivers?
EDIT: After installing alsa.tcz and alsa-modules-5.15.10-tinycore.tcz, I tried the 'lsmod | grep snd' command once more, in the Terminal, and there is now output.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Kelikaku
Welcome to the forum.
... There is no 'oss.tcz'. ...
OSS is no longer offered.
These are the ALSA installation instructions I usually recommend:
http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,22145.msg138620.html#msg138620
Pay attention to the order extensions are installed in.

Thank you. I am not sure, how I did it, but I think it is kind of working now.
Both units are now able to output sound.
After I reboot, it doesn't work till I type
alsactl init

Hi Kelikaku
Did you run steps 7 through 10 in the link I provided?
-
I tried to, but several of the commands did not appear to change anything:
6. Run:
speaker-test [-Ddefault:1] -c2 -t wav -l1
If all went well, you should hear the phrases "Front Left" and "Front Right" from
your left and right speakers respectively.
7. Run:
sudo alsactl store
The speaker test command did not implement. Screen shot below:

Hi Kelikaku
The image you attached shows you attempting to run aplay , not speaker-test.

Sorry. I had trouble getting the screen shot to work.
I'll try again tomorrow and update this reply, with your permission.
