Title: Can some TC tricks be used on ubuntu?

One nice thing about TC is it can coexist with windows in the same FAT partition.  So free space is common to windows and linux.

Can something like this be done with ubuntu or mint, and if yes, how?

Another nice thing is TC has something like deepfreeze in its design - if you delete the backup file it goes back to its original pristine state.

Can something equivalent or similar be done in a regular linux like ubuntu or mint?

Yes, tinycore and other distro can coexist.
I don't know if there a metod to return in original stante, but I don't think

Thanks, but I meant several non-TC linux'es in the same partition - if TC can coexist with other distros, then somehow other distros may be able to do the same between themselves. 

Just had a brainwave. What if directories under / for each distro are moved to one directory and symbolically linked to from tiny partitions, one tiny partition per distro?

Can special "files" like /dev/null or /dev/random be copied or created manually?

They can be, but udev will make them for you.
This is linux 101 stuff.

Thanks.  I'm also glad you used the expression "101" because I have been wanting to know what it means for a while now. 

So does 101 mean "the basics" of something or something like that?

The 101 refers to something you would learn in the first year of studying a subject in school.
