Thinkpad 390 X frezze at boot
« on: May 28, 2011, 03:29:35 AM »
Hello,

got a problem with running TC on IBM Thinkpad 390X (400M,128MRam, 40Ghd, video card NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV 2,5MRam)

works OK in txt mode :)

When I run X : tinycore vga=7xx...( I tried all relvant opions eg 790,791 etc) laptop freeze. I can't do ctrl-alt-del; if I press caps lock LED doesn't work. I can only do hard power off.

I tried puppy linux and gui works OK, win 98 also works OK.

I read many treads regarding installation and settings but it seems that there is not case like that.

Hi sigusmund
Type  dmesg > dmesg.txt
Take the file dmesg.txt and attach it to your next post where it says  Addiitional Options.

Since it looks like Xvesa doesn't work for you, you could try Xorg-7.5.

You might need to google on the name of your graphics hardware AND xorg.conf to get a config that works

Hi,

I did dmesg dump. What do we looking for?

I have problem with copy /paste operation since 390X doesn't have LAN interface - LAN is possible with PCMCIA card.

As I can see fom dump it is stated console vga+ 80x25?

Update:

Laptop doesn't have LAN interface and uses PCMCIA for internet connection. For installing files CDROM could be used .

Video card is supported on Xorg, but I have problems to get it work on 390. Since lack of internet connection I burn CD with Xorg-7.4-dev.tcz. I tried to install it with tcp-load but failed.

I have problem to locate apropriate files for configure xsession -> due to howtos and faq and google it should be on /home/tc/ but there is empy directory.

I tried something with Xfbdev - load it and change Xserver file to fom Xvesa to Xfbdev and then do setup and startx but result was the same- black screen with cursor and laptop freeze.

Did you try to run xsetup.sh from the prompt with Xvesa?

To use Xorg-7.5, you will need to download, save and then load the following files:

pixman.tcz
fontconfig.tcz
openssl-0.9.8.tcz
Xorg-7.5-bin.tcz
Xorg-7.5-lib.tcz
Xorg-fonts.tcz
expat2.tcz
Xorg-7.5.tcz

Hi,

xsetup.sh - of course I did with some frezze results. When I change resolution I get different sizes of cursor, so I thing that configuration is properly read.

By the way - can you explain me why I don't see .xsession in /home/tc directory -> I guess there are  setting sfor Xvesa? Could that be a reason?

And since I am new here could you explain howto download tcz files? If I go to TC download extension page I can see just description of files. However it is advised that application browser should be used - but I have first to bring TS's GUI up and running. ?

I downloaded Xorg-7.4.tczl from http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/ -> 7.4 is the latest release there.
They don't have other files (pixman etc) in repository.

If you have an Internet connection, you can do it with "tce-load -iw Xorg-7.5"

If you do not have an Internet connection, you need to use a url as follows from elsewhere:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/3.x/tcz/extension_name.tcz

Hi Juanito,
This is exactly my problem. I could DL those files from another PC, but there is no link for it.
If I follow your link I get http 404 message "page is not found"
I can see just name of file; however I am able to select to DL md5 and info part? I tried this with IE and Firefox

Hi Tinypoodle,

tnx for joining The party :)

As I can see there are two kind of people on forum - those who tried TC out of a box and win and those who are despertly try to overcome problems and quit :)
I checked again for solution in old posts but failed, I guess I don't have knowledge deep enough, yet.
So I must relay on your advises and uncle google.

Do you have any idea how to solve my problem?
