Tiny Core on Virtual Box Portable
« on: November 03, 2010, 09:16:15 PM »
I saw on Pendrive Linux that there was program that could make Virtual box work on a usb stick or small partition without actually installing anything to your hard drive.  (There are issues at work with installing things)  But as long as I do not install were they can see the icons etc its ok.

So this worked no icons and on a usb or data partition.  (Just like portable aps)
I wanted Tiny Core to slowly replace DSL 4.1.1 which has not been updated in a while and uses Qmenu which is a bit slow.  I mainly use SSH and maybe an IRC chat client.  But know that it can be a lot more if I needed it to be.

It worked really well I ran into three small problems.
In the VM it kept saying not good partition table.
I did sudo su
The fdisk -l
I saw my partition was sda1  (It showed no partition table)

I wanted the installation to keep open ssh so I would not need to install it each time.

I pressed f2
then typed tinycore tce=sda1  (It did not work no ssh next time)
then typed tinycore tce=hda1|sda1 (Like in the menu)

Last was the proxy at work but I saw a note.
I was hoping one of you had tried it with a proxy and was for sure that this worked.

Kind Regards

JWP

No table?  Try repartitioning and reformatting.

The first line was correct, the "|" refers to "or"

I got it to work :)

I a pretty new to the virtual box world.

What I had was the live cd running in a virtual box.
I did the lesson you all had on the page only chaning hda1 for sda1

And it worked I did not do any special boot options

I installed open ssh, nano and bc and the light weight browser in case I need google docs.  There was no SC spreadsheet.

I think the total size is still under 50 MB and memory when the browser is not open does not affect my host.  Very good system with only what I need.

I got the sc package from debian sid repo, ran the deb2tc script on it, seems to work fine (depends on libncurses).
144 Kb size of the .tcz and 896 Kb res mem usage, not too bad for a spreadsheet app.
