from TC2.11.6 to TC3.0
« on: July 20, 2010, 02:12:18 PM »
Just replacing tinycore.gz and bzImage with the new ones did not work this time. What I got is a bar with no installed application icons (although programs are installed).

How should one properly update from 2.11.6 to 3.0?

Thanks!

I believe all the extensions were updated for 3.0 and put in a separate repository. You probably need a new set of extensions as well.

Your appbrowser for 3.0 should access the new repository and be able to update everything that needs it. I put aside my 2.11.6 USB stick and installed 3.0 on a new stick from scratch though (but I don't have a huge number of extensions).

thanks thane, I updated all extensions for 3.o after I replaced tinycore.gz and bzImage, but they still fail to show up on the bar or anywhere in the menu, so I cannot start any of them (except of course exit, aterm, panel, and apps). Even the list of system tools in the menu is incomplete (e.g., xkill is not there).

Sorry it didn't help. On another thread I asked about the same upgrade and got this response (I wanted to save my browser favorites etc. but ended up starting from scratch):

I would honestly say the best thing to do is start from scratch (IMHO). A lot has changed with TC3. For the most part you should be able to retain your home directory, but look at the first post in each of the alpha, rc, and final releases for files in your home directory that you may need to update. (Things like the .X.d directory, .xsession come to mind)

Yeah, I think starting from scratch is what I'm gonna do. Thanks for helping!
