console is cleared on login
« on: February 13, 2009, 07:40:03 AM »
Will someone please point me to the config/script/fileofsomekind that causes the screen to be cleared when you log in?  I think I saw it at some point a couple of weeks ago, but didn't think anything of it at the time.  Now that feature is causing me pain...trying to figure out what I'm breaking, but all I'm getting as feedback is a cleared screen followed by a login prompt...log in...[flash of something followed by a] cleared screen followed by a login prompt...log in....etc.

Not asking for help with what I'm breaking (yet); I'm just pushing buttons and pulling levers =o)

Thanks.

It's rungetty, because there's no "clear" statement anywhere. See man rungetty, it would need --noclear added to /etc/inittab.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

It's rungetty
Thanks...I had no idea it was a default.
Once I got my current confusion cleared up I was planning to use getty  instead, as I do with DSL, so maybe that will be enough.

I'm guessing the pause boot code might not work, since my problem seems to be happening after login (I think I may have broken something in /home/tc).  I'll try it anyway, before changing inittab.

Thank you both.

I can't say how much the use of "pause" helps, considering i deleted somefiles from my persistent local which apparently were causing trouble, but that option at least allowed me to see the messages from init, which is always a good thing.  I think I'll need to recreate my local directory, since it was originally created from tcz files...I have a feeling it would be better to use tce and add anything outside /usr/local to a remaster.

As it stands now I no longer have the problem with getting kicked back to a login prompt, and I'm still not sure why that happened.  With the future use of getty instead of rungetty I'm guessing I won't see it again, though it doesn't explain what caused the trouble.  It seems as though it might be related to using OSS.tzcm as part of a persistent tclocal.
