remastering section questions
« on: May 21, 2010, 12:44:15 AM »
Please note that specific remaster support, and its related announcements should be directed to their sites (which is now listed under the remaster section).

 ???
From ^thehatsrule^'s Rules for posting in this (remastering)  section
Quote
This section's intention is to hold a list of remasters, or remixes.  It is not intended to hold discussions of them.
???
So ^thehatsrule^, is there any discussion of re-masters allowed in this forum?

The rules are right there...?  Please follow them.  As for your question, for specific remasters refer to my previous post.

I guess is hard to get a straight answer, isn't it?
So re-masters should go to their section and according to your rules should provide info for

specific remaster support, and their related announcements should be directed to their sites (see point 3)
...
3. A link to the site - must contain full sources, including TC/MC's

I'm totally confused, so please avoid sibylic answers allowing multiple interpretations and try  "yes/no" in the following (hopefully clear) questions.

- Should the "sources" site also include a forum for support and discussion as "remaster support"?
- Should the "sources" site point to a thread/forum for "remaster support"?
- Can the re-master post contain a link to another forum for re-master support?
- Can re-masters be discussed/supported in this forum?
- Is the re-master announcing thread proper for discussion/support?
- Can a new thread in the "Remasters / Remixes - Unofficial" section, be started to support one of these remasters?
- Can re-masters offer support in another forum and link from this one?

I have the "fortune" to offer the first re-master in the re-mastering section and I understand we are going in uncharted territory, but deleting links and offering vague responses does not help at all.
(BTW I find that deleting a link to another thread/forum discussing the exact same re-mastering, is totally inappropriate - to put it gently)

I guess there might be confusion surrounding the term 'specific', which means something that is explicitly given, or you could look at it as being "not general" in nature.  Is this part of the rule confusing?

To indulge in the rest... (slightly reordered)

Should? No - "a link to the site" means a reference to a resource location on the web (i.e. http://www.tinycorelinux.com/ )

- Can re-masters offer support in another forum and link from this one?
Sure, see above for the description of "a link to the site".

Quote
- Can re-masters be discussed/supported in this forum?

Discussed - yes, but only non-specific remaster topics.  All others are to be redirected.  This is described by:

Rules exists for a reason, and using them in a moderated environment such as a forum is fine, in my opinion - but why do you think otherwise? (just curious here).

Perhaps the rule is not as clear as it could be but what's vague and confusing for one can be clear to another, especially with language/culture barriers.

and moved.

That's just a limitation of the forum software (at least, at it's current settings) where moving needs as an extra step.

I guess yes/no is out of question....

I'll give the answers and tell me if the language/culture barrier is still there....

- Should the "sources" site also include a forum for support and discussion as "remaster support"? NO
- Should the "sources" site point to a thread/forum for "remaster support"? NO
- Can the re-master post contain a link to another forum for re-master support? YES
- Can re-masters be discussed/supported in this forum? YES
(but then why this whole thing started when the remastering was discussed in the OLPC XO thread?)
- Is the re-master announcing thread proper for discussion/support? NO
- Can a new thread in the "Remasters / Remixes - Unofficial" section, be started to support one of these remasters? NO
- Can re-masters offer support in another forum and link from this one? YES
(but then why the links to another forum where TC-XO was originally published have been deleted by you twice?)

Anyway, I'll update the announcement post with the support thread. If you delete again I'll now that the language/culture(?) barrier is still there

Let me share my view on the topic (please note, I'm not a TC team menber, so it is strictly personal).

Basics are simple and easy to understand.

1) You can use TC freely to create custom versions, what ever remastered flavour as you want as long as you follow the licensing rules (GPL)

2) You can discuss technical aspects of remastering here freely.

3) You can introduce your version here freely with a short description and pointers to its own site.

4) All other activities, like download, support forum, mailing lists, docs, etc. must be provided out of this forum. A new version, call it spin, remaster, whatever as you want is your baby, you have to deal with it and not the TC team or community.

5) Please do it on a proper way not to demage TC itself.

THANK YOU bmarkus
This is clear!
(If you deciphered these from ^thehatsrule^'s postings :o I really feel bad about myself...)

^thehatsrule^ please sign off  bmarkus' comments, if indeed is the case, so other comprehension-challenged people can understand what is that you are asking.

I elaborated and showed which parts of the rules were applied to try to help you to understand the current rule.  I took apart your questions to answer certain parts of the questions because there is no one answer for some.  So the actual answers are in my previous post.  Please look again.  Also, I would appreciate it if you attempted to answer my questions, as I did with yours.

bmarkus' understanding is correct, but it is more of an overview than covering the specifics.

I will edit again.  Links were deleted because at one time it was not in the correct section (no remaster thread yet, I think), and that the more recent one didn't follow
Quote
Please note that specific remaster support, and their related announcements should be directed to their sites (see point 3).

Note that I don't know if they were forum links or not, as editing occurs in the post's context in this case.

The article 'a' refers to 'one', or '1' (is this clearer?).  Also, there seems to be confusion as you used the phrase "sources" site.  As bmarkus pointed out, this is due to the license.  If you don't remember, if someone distributes binaries of software under this license, full sources (referring to source code) also needs to be distributed as well.  Note that it doesn't matter what kind of site it is, it could be a ftp or git repository for example.  This might seem odd to someone relatively new to this open-source license, but apparently that's how it is.

Seemingly, this new section might not be a good idea after all...

Please provide a link to a preexisting rule.

Also, I would appreciate it if you attempted to answer my questions, as I did with yours.
Please quote a question of yours

Please provide an acceptable way that a link to a support thread of a re-mastering can be published in THIS forum. If not possible, please provide a preexisting rule or a reasoning for this ban.

Seemingly, this new section might not be a good idea after all...
I'm sure you can delete anything you want in this forum...

I believe there are reasonable grounds for suspicion of the possibility of flaming/trolling/etc, and thus related threads will be locked until further notice.
