front channels yes.
Tried with mplayer and totem.
I use the 3 stereo jack outputs from my onboard sound card:
Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)

Alsa doesn't do surround automatically; defaults to stereo.

^ the 0.1 number above depends on your setup. See the link above.
