Wording - Download Howto Using Appbrowser
« on: March 02, 2010, 03:56:33 AM »
On page http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/ last menu item is

'Download Howto Using Appbrowser'

It indicates a download link, that something will be downloaded when click. Would be good to change to

'Howto manage extensions with Appbrowser'

or something like that.

I agree. Furthermore, it might be nice to have a link directing people to a location from which they can download extensions without using Appbrowser.

Users without acccess to an ethernet connection may need to download some extensions (particularly those necessary to establish a wifi connection). Here is the relevant link, I believe:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/2.x/tcz_backup/

No, the link is http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/2.x/tcz then the extension name, for example emelfm.tcz

tcz_backup was the backup used when last converting the repo, I will remove it.

So in that case there is NO place to download extensions without using appbrowser. Is that what you want?

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/emelfm.tcz

I get this response

Thanks.

Note that when you click on the address you listed previously--

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/2.x/tcz

you are actually taken to--

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/

which is why it didn't work when I added emelfm.tcz at the end, as instructed. I didn't realize that the link I was given would take me to the wrong link.

We do discourage using a web browser to download extensions, mostly for issues with dependencies that arise.  But if you must grab extensions while running another distro to get a network connection set up, then I posted a little script in the programming and scripting section that should make it easier.

Excellent! I will test it and then try to draft something for the wiki so that people with netbooks and no ethernet line know what to do. I'll make sure that I try to get your input on whatever I come to write.
