..don't know if this was there before, but I started to notice the following error:

libfam.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Failed to load module: /usr/local/lib/gio/modules/libgiofam.so..with some gui apps.

Where:

$ ldd /usr/local/lib/gio/modules/libgiofam.so
...
        libfam.so.0 => not found
...
I guess this is referring to the file alteration monitor library - anyway, it doesn't appear to prevent things working.

libfam is part of gamin.tcz Is it installed?

No - I only just figured out that libfam was "hidden" in gamin.

I will check to see if a fam dependency has crept in.
