xorg-vesa-lite

xorg-vesa-lite doesn't seem to work on an Eee  900. I just get dropped into a terminal. Let me know if I can help diagnose the problem.

Would xorg-vesa-lite have DPMS support? If not, xvesa is good enough for me.

Yes, it should have DPMS. Please post /var/log/Xorg.0.log after it tries to start.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

I'm booting this test version or TC from an SDHC card. For what it's worth, here are the boot codes from syslinux.cfg:

I think someone had this same problem before and my suggestion was to
- autogenerate a xorg.conf if you haven't already (ignore any errors)
- comment out the "shadow" line
- startx
... which was a possible workaround but I cannot remember if it worked or not.

OK. I copied an xorg.conf that I know works for the machine into /etc/X11 and tried both "startx" and "sudo startx". No joy.

I dropped into root (sudo su) and ran Xorg -configure. That failed.

I also tried installing graphics-2.6.29.1-tinycore.tcz. That also failed.

Installing the full xorg also failed. I'll continue to experiment and report back if I can find an xorg.config that works.

It looks like xvesa may be the best option for the Eee 900. That's really no problem for me since I generally prefer xvesa. DPMS support, however, seems necessary in order to have support for standby. . . . Unless I can figure out a way to switch off the lcd backlight when "echo standby > /sys/power/state" drops me into a terminal screen. If I could do that, then I think the computer running xvesa would go into true standby mode. That would involve some direct harware control software.

Why reconnect to wifi?

I gave it a try, but I still end up with the same problem (but vbetool does work just fine). Apparently, "echo standby" drops me into a different user mode or different terminal. Vbetool switches the backlight of the gui terminal off and on, but not whatever terminal or mode standby uses.

As to wifi, "echo standby" also swiches the wifi radio off and then back on again, so I need to reconnect to my ESSID.

I dropped into root (sudo su) and ran Xorg -configure. That failed.

Yes, I am happy with xvesa, but I may still try to get xorg-lite running; others may find it necessary.

How does one go about autogenerating an xorg.config? I thought that's what I did when I ran Xorg -configure.
