Tiny Core is great!
« on: November 25, 2009, 04:27:32 PM »
I have known about tinycore for quite some time, and now I have finally had the time to really dig into it. I have installed it to a usb stick, using the USB install from the live CD. Following the instructions from the FAQ, forums etc., I have installed the Norwegian keymap, managed to get all keys working in terminal as well as in the browser, installed a couple of extensions ... and I love it! The speed and simplicity is simply astonishing!

I have used DSL quite a lot in the past, and I really love to see that some of the great ideas that Robert and others introduced to DSL are developed further in tinycore!

Tomorrow I'll try and get wireless working, and I'm gonna try it on my Asus Eee 1000H. Should be fun :-)

I am not sure if it is considered inappropriate to answer my own post like this (or rather build on it), but here it goes!

The other day I got a message from a disk analysis tool on my office computer (where I run Linux - Ubuntu at the moment) that my disk had many bad sectors, and I was adviced to backup and replace the disk since there were some fatal errors involved. This could have been really bad news, but it really wasn't. What I did was fire up Tiny Core from a usb stick, and continue working from there. I have only installed firefox, some extra keymaps and cups to enable printing, and everything is like normal ... at least sort of :-)

On the positive side, this gives me the opportunity to get some more experience with Tiny Core, and I can only say that I like it more and more as time goes by!

I have to say this is hands down a very potent distro. I was contemplating starting my own distro from LFS but then ran into this. I love it. Would not mind dishing out a few donations if it means keeping this whole thing up and running. (hint: Make a donate link) I absolutely love to see a FUNCTIONAL linux distro vs and End all, Do everything distro. Now its time to jump into writing some custom extensions!

Hi Reidar
I am a newbie to tinycore and have successfully installed it to an old Dell laptop. I see that you have installed firefox successfully. I downloaded firefox using the appsbrowser but it want work not even a desktop logo. I would appreciate some advice if you have the time.
