Marginal case - Suspend help request
« on: January 15, 2009, 09:41:55 PM »
Didn't know whether to put this under base or extensions (suspend.tce?).

Any/all help welcome. Pardon the long logs below.

Problem: Suspend (to ram) doesn't work. N410c

Details:

In short, running an HP/Compaq Evo N410c. Suspend isn't quite right, haven't tried hibernate. On some kernels, the hardware doesn't completely come out of suspend (black screen, no hardware detection, etc). This is a known problem with multiple distros ... but it just happens to work fine on Xubuntu 8.04.1 (Hardy Heron; just had to remove acpi=off from kernel args).

I've installed TC with the suspend & cpufreq extensions. The system goes into suspend fine, but it's random on how far it comes out. Always blank/black screen. Occassionally (1/20 times) keyboard works enough to issue reboot (ctrl-alt-del). I've been trying to debug things and then resetting by hand.

echo -n mem sends down the system fine. The hardware recognizes its wake-up call (any of three possible switches/buttons).

I've read about and tried store/restoring the vid buffer and switching consoles http://www.linux.com/feature/54610. No real help there.

I've read about the kernel suspend procedure http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3066404. I'll rebuild the kernel and debug the long way if necessary.

Current plan is to dig through Xubuntu and learn how/what it's doing.

Again, all help welcome!

if you go to http://en.opensuse.org/S2ram there's a bunch of things you could try to troubleshoot

Juanito - thanks for the opensuse site. I've tried just a few things, one helps a good bit.

Tested:
vga=0 (except video, everything comes out alive every time now. Thanks for that!)
acpi_sleep=s3_mode (no good)
acpi_sleep=s3_bios (hard lock after suspend)
acpi_sleep=s3_mode,s3_bios (hard lock after suspend)

Still reading/searching/testing.

Juanito -

Thanks again - suspend and restore successfully from within X:

Code: [Select]
s2ram -f -p -m
Output from s2ram -i:
Code: [Select]
    sys_vendor   = "Compaq "
    sys_product  = "Evo N410c                           "
    sys_version  = ""
    bios_version = "686A2 Ver. F.14"

I'll keep testing for other working codes, but I'll consider this solved. I'll record any further notes at my own site (dentonlt.com/trombonepress/).

Cheers =)

Hey - great news  :)

Out of interest, did you require the dbus extension or did it work without?

without dbus_glib extension (I see you have that listed on the repository). I rebooted with only suspend.tce and pci_utils.tce, and it still works great.

Next projects are hibernate and linking the suspend button to the suspend script. I'll let you know if I have any success with suspend-to-disk.

Thanks for compiling those extensions. Obviously useful stuff!

Since I got s2ram working, I repacked suspend.tce for my system. I added a wbar icon/spec file, menu file, and short script. I've attached the icon/spec/menu files below. Maybe they'll be useful for others.

To use these, one would have to create a script at /usr/local/bin/suspend.sh, and then repack the tce with all four files. See the wiki guide on Creating tce/tcz files.
