nas that can be mounted nfs
« on: July 12, 2010, 11:54:26 AM »
perhaps obvious to some, but it's taken me a long time to find a nas hd that can be used by both windows and linux machines (without losing permissions, ownership, etc).

Not all a plug for the manufacturer, but the wd sharespace nas has an nfs option that can be enabled via the browser interface, which allows an nfs share on the nas to be mounted using nfs-utils with tc.

Just from my experience: Any old PC hardware (desktop or laptop) can be turned into an excellent NAS by booting FreeNAS CD.  FreeNAS software (Based on mini version of BSD) boots very quickly and is very reliable. It supports all - Linux and Windows clients, has SMB and NFS, can be configured as RAID. I have been using it for several years as RAID 1 NAS. No monitor, no keyboard or mouse, just the small box with drives and network card. Works beautifully... Management and configuration via Web browser.
