Openssl-0.9.8k is self contained in /usr/local/openssl-0.9.8k by design.  The reason was discussed at length in a couple of other threads.  The only way to update an openssl installed into /usr/local/lib is to rebuild all packages dependent on openssl upon every openssl update, which is not feasible.
