Can the /tce directory live on a ntfs partition, with restore?
« on: December 07, 2009, 09:03:55 PM »
I am interested in getting tcl going on SWMBO's PC but can't easily create a new partition for tcl. It has one big ntfs partition.

I have tried it but mydata.tgz apparently did not get restored because it booted into default wm mode. I'm not sure if it loaded the extensions, it seemed to. Waitusb=5 didn't do anything to improve matters.

Can I put /tce on the ntfs c drive, with restore?

You can normally resize the ntfs partition while running Windows.

It is normally best to run defragment first.

After reducing the size of the ntfs partition, you can create an Ext3 partition and a swap partition in the free space using Linux. One method is to use the Parted Magic CD http://www.digitalincursion.net/partedmagic/.

There may be some differences with different versions of Windows.

Explore the options while running Windows.

Which version of Windows is on the computer?

Many people see what is. Some people see what can be, and make a difference.

You can resize the ntfs partition using ntfsprogs - I did this some time ago, back in the dsl days...

It's her work notebook PC, I hesitate to do that, hence my question if tce can run from a ntfs partition. It's so much easier and straightforward if it could. It seems so close...

Will the computer boot from a usb drive?

If it will, you could install Tiny Core on a usb drive.

the ntfs kernel module is in the filesystems-2.6.29.1-tinycore extension, so I don't think you'll be able to boot tc from an ntfs partition.

I guess you could re-compile the kernel to include ntfs...

you CAN boot tc from a pure NTFS system - using GRUB4DOS.

I have remastered tc with ntfs-3g.tczl included to be able to access my Windows disk from within tc.
