Just tested on a clean 2.9, worked fine.

I use Xorg.
xonclock from a terminal, press enter, nothing, no messages

Same result here as reported by curaga: On TC 2.9 and 2.10rc1 using either (default) Xvesa or Xorg X server the xonclock application is working well (test system: QEMU VM v0.11.1)
jls_legalize: You could try to run 'xonclock' using strace. That might reveal something.
