If you need true transparency, you'll need Xorg and an app for that. I think that only Xfce has a panel with transparency in our current extensions.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

xfwm should be built with --enable compositor for that i think
dunno how to check that at the moment

it is enabled i think settings-> window manager teaks-> compositor and transparent windows and panel  :)
