These are extra notes to keep the info files for uzdoom and freedoom shorter.
First my hardware may impact on my limited testing. I have graphics that come from the AMD CPU which means I have a processor with the letter G in the name....also known as AMD APU. So if you have a discrete video card maybe with GPU or onboard graphics, you may see different results to me. This impacts on my decisions on using GPU for hardware rendering below
Xorg/wayland resolution
################
No need to know what your current resolution is....see below to change it in game.
First Start
############
Before you launch uzdoom, no ~/.config/uzdoom/uzdoom.ini
On launch expect a GUI with 2 tabs.
https://imgur.com/RtOQIwVIf you click TAB 2
https://imgur.com/a/QrAej2ua list of languages appear and you can choose one if your langage is listed. You will notice a box called Don't ask me again....I suggest you use that only if you have tested your choices and they work please.
Start game on TAB1 or 2 by clicking play game
Other recommendations to try out game....I suggest you try out on a desktop that has keyboard shortcuts to allow you to navigate to another workspace. Also does not hurt to load xorg-server-zap and remember the keys to exit back to tty.
# Game appears but resolution issues
####################################
I am suggesting that most of you will not have it appearing at your preferred resolution. And even if you have full screen ticked
(in TAB2 default) it may not launch in full screen. So :
Use mouse or kb arrow keys to click options -> Set video mode -> Chose Resolution preset ->
(make your choice) -> wait....with luck screen will show 2 options
Apply Changes Windowed or Fullscreen
If you are already fullscreen....choose the latter otherwise choose windowed.
At the top of this screen you can now consider to try game in vulkan, OpenGLES or OpenGL (default is vulkan)
Below that is Render mode....do you have a video card or rely on CPU?
Choices are hardware (so not relying on CPU) OR Doom software render OR True Color software render
(if in doubt choice Doom)
Apply changes
Press the escape key TWICE to go back to game screen OR
click the top LH corner for the << arrows TWICE to go back to game screen
The rest I leave up to you....but in game press TAB key for map and number of monsters and secrets to find
# Sound issues and options
##########################
openal125 supports alsa pipewire pulseaudio portaudio and sdl2.
portaudio and sdl2 do not need a setup but you may need to test your mixer levels with non-game TCE
eg if you have a mp3 does mpg123 play sound? If you like a bigger player, try mpv
Sound should work as soon as game starts. Before I packaged openal125, I tried loading timidity and fluidsynth.....both of these as per their info files can play midi files with their soundfont files independent of game. Both of these midi players left me no sound for reasons I know not. With openal125 and a terminal running it claims I am using alsa default
To my hearing, Timidity Wildmidi Fluidsynth Gus Emulation sound similar
OPL Synth Emulation has more bass than above line
but libOPN sounds crisper than above .....YMMV
Choice your midi sound...do not load timidity nor fluidsynth.
To allow your choice -> click Advance Options -> restart sound
# Using keyboard with mouse
###########################
If you have no gamepad, its easy to play with kb and mouse
default key w moves forward
default key e = open or activate wall switch or elevator
default space jump
default x crouch
The ones I believe you might like to set
Settings -> customise controls -> Action
Turn Left click and press a # you lose strafe left
Turn Right click and press f # so strafe right remains d
Why? Sometimes while using the mouse and not want to go into reverse....you get locked up against the wall YMMV But the turn left and right options get you out.
Good luck
