As of ESXi 8 it can. But I'm using ESXi 6.7 on an AMD Steamroller which does not have a hardware generator, and is not supported under ESXi 8 anyway so it's just not going to happen anytime soon. If I had to guess I would say I'm probably not alone in this regard.
